Default Transmission Noise

A few weeks ago on the way home from Seattle the transmission in my R started making a really bad whining noise. Also had the clutch and pressure platch replaced. After some research I concluded that it was a bearing(s) on the mainshaft, so I had those replaced. As soon as I got the car back it had a whining noise, but it's really only very noticeable in 4th and 5th gear between 2600-3100rpm and light on the throttle. There is a little while in 1st, 2nd and 3rd but it's barely audible and isn't a disturbance like the while in 4th and 5th.

I'm trying to diagose this problem, any suggestions on where to start or what could be causing this?

it sounds like the 4th and 5th speed gear bearins are going out. most likely its time for an internal inspection and some replacement of bearings, while your in there you might wanna replace the syncronizer blocker rings. let me know if you need more info for diagnosis

No, I'm sure it's not the intake noise, it's a mechanical whine, not an air whine. The wierd thing is that the transmission was inspected when all the bearings were replaced and they said everything looked fine, but when I got the car back it made a whining noise, not from the input bearing, but from an unknown source. The Acura dealer is trying to tell me the sound is normal (I'm suppose to hear a whine in my transmission even while the radio is on?). Could the while be related to the install of the new bearings?

the trans tech could have improperly installed the bearings but i doubt it. but its really hard to get a good understanding of the problem with no noise to hear. do you have a vid or sound clip of it? that would make the diagnosis a lot easier.

the other thing is was the trans fully rebuilt by a shop or was it a weeked job by a friend? also did they fully dissasemble the imput shaft and main shaft? cuz if they just inspected the case bearings then they didnt do you very much justice.

i would actually think that the differential sidegear bearings were going if you said that the problem was under load. but your conditions are not load conditions. does it make the sound under compression braking?

How loud is the whirring/whining?

I get some resonance off my flywheel (7.5lb Fidanza), but its not that audable, and its only under very light throttle under 4000rpms.

If it is more of a whining than a whirring, then it very well could be bearing related.

All the work was done by my local Acura dealer. I would definitly consider it more of a whining noise. Right now I'm not sure what to do because the Acura dealer is sure that they didn't do anything to the transmission and are not very willing to take the transmission apart. They said that the ONLY thing that could make the whining go down is to start replacing gears. I think it's bearing related because when they had the transmission apart they said everything looked fine. I forget which bearings they replaced exactly but I think they replaced all three on the mainshaft, I'll look into it. The dealer is going to find me a similar car to drive to show me that the whine I'm hearing is "Within spec". I'll keep you guys updated when I know more.

Been driving the car some more, the sound seems to be worse between 42 and 55 ish, if that means anything.
