Default how to use a micrometer?

I just picked up a set of 0-3" .0001 mitutoyo mics for 50 beans used off ebay. I figured out how to read them but still have a couple of questions.

How tight do u turn them to measure something, both friction and rachet

What does that little lever do "the one near the thimble"

How do u calibrate them?

you calibrate them with those '' sticks'' that came with them; use the appropiate one and zero out the micro.
when you measure something you dont turn them hard at all, just untill you feel slight drag. For the 2-3 you use that nipple at the end, turn until it clicks.
that lever is to lock the micro in place so the measurement dont get messed up.

thats a very good price you payed by the way
