Moaning noise as car decelerates.....
2001 Prelude SE 5-Speed.
I've noticed that as the car comes to a halt or as the revs start to get very low and the car begins to come to a complete stop, it starts to make a moaning noise just before it stops when you stop giving it gas and push in the clutch. Almost as if something is rubbing or vibrating. I was also having a squealing/grinding noise when starting from still in first gear last summer but haven't noticed it as much probably because I haven't driven the car as much lately due to the crappy weather. I'm going to bring it to the shop on Thursday, but I thought I'd ask you guys if you have any ideas what it could be.
Thanks.

can you tell where the noise is coming from ? suspension related ?
The only thing i can think of that wold make a moaning/whining noise is axles and or throwout bearing or possible slighty warped rotors.
Have you ever replaced the clutch ? If so was a new T/O bearing installed and greased PROPERLY? Ive had a brand new bearing take a dump on me and it makes some pretty funky *** noises.
Again try and locate the general area of the noise, we may be able to help you better.

No, clutch has never been replaced 48,000 kms on the car. Don't think it's the brakes, or suspension seems to be coming from engine area so I was thinking possibly T/O as well but everybody seems to have different symptoms of a bad throwout bearing. I think the dealer will never diagnose a worn T/O bearing without saying the plate is worn too, cause the plate isn't under warranty but bearings are...... I don't know. Maybe I'll bring it in this afternoon instead and see what they say.
Well here's the honda mechanics verdict. Apparently the vibrating/moaning noise on deceleration is from the timing belt related to this bulletin......
TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN: MFG Bulletin Number: 01010
MFG Bulletin Date: 010101
Component: ENGINE:TIMING GEAR AND CHAIN
Details: ON SOME VEHICLES, THE TIMING BELT MAKES A FLAPPING NOISE BECAUSE ITS IMPROPERLY TENSIONED. THE NOISE IS MOST NOTICEABLE BETWEEN 1800 AND 2600 RPM.
MCS Check Date: 20020528
Hopefully that's the answer.

its possible, but you described a moaning noise. If the belt wasn't tensioned correctly it would show signs of accelerated wear. Also, if the auto tensioner failed, it wouldn't just slowly crap out, it would take a fat **** causing you to mash all your valves. It either works or it doesn't.
New auto tensioner is around 90-100 dollars depending on who you know. It comes with the tool to re-clamp it as well. If you are under warranty have them replace that as well as oil change and junk
Also, that specific bulletin may not pertain to your year. its the first I've ever heard of it.

Not true. The 97+ auto-tensioners have a TSB saying how they can fail prematurely... and it makes those noises like he is saying. I had the same thing with my 97 base at around 67000 or so. I found out about the TSB, took it in, and they replaced the auto-tensioner for free, all I had to purchase was a new timing belt (figured I'd change it then instead of waiting the extra 23000 or so) Anyhow, with that changed it fixed the issue.

Thats exactly it. Typically the "flapping" occurs between 1500 and 2500 rpm under deceleration. Do the entire timing belt kit, including water pump. That way you won't have to worry about it later.
My autotensioner started going bad just under 36K miles. I took it in and they claimed it was the clutch. With a little persuation they changed the clutch under warranty but, it didn't fix the problem. It took a lot of convincing them that it was the autotensioner. I had to talk to the Master Mech and he agreed with me, I had it all done for free at 39k (no extended warranty). I think they were a little embarrassed they didn't figure it out the first time and that I physically had to show them.

Agreed! Sounds like the timing belt auto-tensioner has gone bad.
The one on my 00 Prelude was replaced under warranty (extended warranty) at 40,000mi. It had the exact symptoms you descibe.

I have a 99 and i just had to replace the belt and tentioner at 45k cuse the tentioner was ****. The sound it was making was a flapping noise that i originally miss-took for a valve tick. Other than that it was just idleing not-so-great. What first set me off was that it basically just sounded like ****, like it needed an oil change like 5k miles ago even know the oil was good. I didnt notice any moaning on decel. You know your engine better then anyone, hows it running other than the moan?
