Default Unusual question - importing a motor from the States

Hey all,

I woulda posted this in classifieds but I can't post there, still a fair few away from my 20!

Anyhow, it's almost time to source a new engine swap and turbo conversion for my 88 CRX. The good folks in this forum steered me in the right direction so I'm after a b18c or c5. My mechanic tells me I'll need something that has had a good rebuild, perhaps a setup like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...33615

Only in the States can you get mega swaps like this at a decent price! There's nothing like that here in Aus, so I'm prepared to get one shipped. Yeah, it's expensive, my budget for this is about 12k tho... I can get a bigger bang for my buck going this way. Can't really afford to pay someone to rebuild a motor and add a $10k turbo conversion on top of that.

Anyways... put simply I'd need a trustworthy soul or group to inspect the chosen gear to make sure it's not a scam, then I'd need a safe place within the US to ship to (most of these aren't international auctions) which can then on forward to Sydney in Aus. Obviously I'd have to pay for these services.

Does anyone have any starting points as to how I'd co-ordinate such a trade? Perhaps there are companies that do this for people. Or maybe there's a few members out there wanting to make a quick buck =D

This won't happen for a few months at the soonest... just laying out the groundwork so I'm prepared for when the right motor comes along.

Cheers!

If I was at home I would help but your first job will probably find someone on the West Coast to help you out.

Ah thanks for the replies... yeah I'll have to find a contact there, maybe when the time is closer it'll happen. I really don't want to have to fly over personally 'cause it'll cost me another $1k! Although I would still do that if I had no choice.

Agreed that it will be tricky to find someone trustworthy, but there are good people everywhere, you just gotta look hard for 'em =D

Any other ideas? I would really like to know of a shipping company that could handle the transaction.

I wish I could help out a fellow CRX'er, good luck man! I say maybe try to get a company or a shop to ship one for you, that is some of the only people I would trust from so far away.

Good luck!

deal with a company (a big one) that ships motors all of the time. I think it may be easier if you bought it from passwordjdm (if they have it) or someone like that and have them ship it to you from there. don't give your money to some member to have them ship it out for you.

OR use a shipping broker because most of them are trustworthy. ask for their business address, info, who you're talking to, etc etc etc

DONF is an engine builder. His shop's number is 904 378 4480 and he would be a good guy to call. Infact, he shipped a whole race car to Australia not too long ago.
