Default Insurance hike

Either my insurance company has gotten wind of what I am doing to the car on weekends, or all of a sudden, Integras are not as "safe" as they used to be. Jacked my rates by 18 bucks a month. Doesn't sound like a lot until you think that is a full *30%* of what I was paying before. God I hate insurance companies sometimes. I didn't even file with them when some punk hits ME. I filed with his ty insurance co., and besides, it is not my driving that raised the rate, it was the "national rating for that car" according to the agent. So everyone, stop wrecking and stealing integras. you are costing me money
Ug, sorry for the rant. Just pissed...

Yikes. First year I had the Si (1999) the insurance was very reasonable. After a full year, the insurance industry had a better idea of the level of risk associated with insuring these things, and it jumped about $600 for the year. With my old company, it was grouped in with the Z28, Mustang, Lotus, Maserati group. I soon changed companies, but it's not much better. I pay an ASSLOAD of money every month to insure this damn Civic. (about $200) I will say that I DO pay for the highest coverage I can get.

Insurance for the Type R went up this year as well. Can't recall how much but a little less than $18 / month

I called my agent and asked why and they said it was nothing to do with me personally, just an actuarial decision about the car.

Regards,
Alan

See the "stolen car" thread for part of the explanation and that "High School Kids Killed During Lunch" site for the rest. What should really upset you is that your gender and age seem to be factored into the math. If retired women cost my resturant more in terms of service demands and clean up, would it be tolerated if I charged them more for meals?

Just a thought...

No kidding, but I am over 25 and married with a clean driving record (knock on wood).. All of that should be waived....Shopping around, seems like I really have a good rate, too.
Most other ins. co's are wayyy higher. Sheesh!

That sucks. A 30% increase is one hellaciously big price hike. But if I did my math right, that means you were paying about $60/month before the increase, which amounts to less per annum than what I am paying with State Farm for my GSR. Plus, I'm WAY older than 25, have kids, have an excellent driving record, and also get multi-car and low annual mileage discounts. That tells me I need to shop around again for better auto insurance rates!

remember that better rates do not mean a better deal
you have to look at things like turn-around time for claims, how much they hike the rate for tickets or fender benders, etc.
just my .02 cents

The retired ladies probably wouldn't tolerate it, but everyone else who got a $.50 discount would prolly think it was pretty cool.

For the record, I pay $186/mo for my NSX. And my rates went up by 25% when I had a little fender-bender with my caravan back in '99. And I'm still 24. And my rates are still much better than I could get with another company. USAA is pretty sweet, actually.

Mine has actually has gone down..?
I think because preludes are considered sports cars, and that the car is getting old..

Also what helped me a lot is having good grades in school, got a 33% drop when I got AB honor roll... I pay about 90$ every month, and I am 20, with a ticket..

I've heard that USAA is an excellent insurance company.
Funny thing a few months ago, I was doing some online quote requests with a few companies. Decided to see what Geico had to say for me (not that I would ever give them a penny). After I put in all my information it spits out the following (and this is by no means word for word):
The rate for your policy is [approx.] $2300 for 6 months. You may activate this policy for submitting a payment of "ONLY $830!"

KIDDING BE GOTTA YOU!

And as soon as you made a claim, they would probably have dropped you. Geico is such crap.

Here's why:

http://www.hwysafety.org/vehicle_rat...l/ictl_2dr.htm

Check out the "Theft" rating of 1487 or nearly 15x worse than average. That's up from around 1000 last year. That's why your insurance is more.

Niiice. Theft rates for Civics/Integras are sky high. Notice how no one steals domestic cars. I also see that the integra is the only car with all 3 fields in the red. That sucks. If I wanted to pay this much a month to insure the car, I'd buy a nicer car. This thing is 7 years old almost fer cryin' out loud....
Called around. Brand new WRX would cost me less than I am paying now for a 95. Now if ad valorem would only give me a break...

My insurance is with State Farm, and when I first bought the Camaro, I was paying about $600 every six months. Well, within a year of me buying the car, the rate dropped to about $350 because they decided to stop charging a "high performance surcharge." I now pay less than $300 every six months on the Camaro, about $150 a year on the motorcycle and same for the two Escorts.

Uh, yeah, I alone own more cars than some families. And my brother has just as many!

Karen

ps. you wouldn't be so keen on USAA if celica73 posted his experience with them. All I'll say is you'd better hope you *never* have to file a claim.

Just be glad I don't post my experience with Geico claims. Someday I'll calm down enough to talk about it...

Hrm. I'd like to hear that story, actually. Because everyone I've ever spoken to who has had to file claims (including my friend who put his MR-Spyder into a ditch and later got a wreckless charge) has had no problems at all, other than the rental car coverage being completely inadequate (which is part of the reason I want to own two cars). Even when I rear-ended someone 2 years ago, and my car showed no signs of damage, but he had a $1500 estimate and wanted to have doctor bills paid for, I never heard from him again after I put him in touch with USAA, so I'm assuming everything went ok.

If celica73 filed a claim because of an on-track or autocross accident, then I can understand why he'd have a horror story, because at least my insurance policy very broadly excludes everything involving racing and race tracks.

Doesn't this suck? We all love Hondas but because of the actions of thieves and dumb drivers it is difficult to in fact own a Honda. I've only had my Integra for 4 months and someone has already tried to steal my VTEC badge (now it just says TEC). I honestly told my mom not to get an ITR because I didn't want her to have a car that attracts so much negative attention (we don't have a garage). Then there's Drew's incident with his Integra getting stolen. And of course all of the dummys out there who think they're on Best Motoring or playing Gran Turismo on public roads crashing.

My solution? Lets form a vigilante organization to help stem the tide of Honda theft by making use of word of mouth networking and perhaps coercion. We could hang out at shops, street racing hot spots, and car washes and ambush people, checking vin numbers. Then we could stake out these same places and force people to autocross so that they learn that there is a better way. Confiscate cars that are slammed to the ground and prone to accidents because of ill-handling. Those who don't cooperate will be sent to Honda Attitude Makeover and Mind Erasing Resort (HAMMER) Yes, its tough love but I'll be damned if people driving around Excursions pay less for insurance than me in my perfectly reasonable compact sports car .

I need a . Maybe

Gerald, who suffers from acute mania

How about never buying questionable used parts or theft recovery insurance totals and making a big noise about any enthusiast who does?

Perhaps we could get the SCCA to provide auto insurance policies to its members who compete in events (like, you have to compete in a min number of events per year, not just be a member), which would then make the case that you are a good driver and that you keep your car in a good-handling state.

Still doesn't solve the theft rate problem, though.

Oh crap.... I just gave Geico a call today to switch over to them. They gave me a pretty good price quote so I thought what the heck. But now its sounding like they aren't as good as their commercials make them out to be.

Hey maxQ (and anyone else), do tell your story(s) about Geico. I would greatly appreciate it.

johng has a story where he just happened to mention the general possibility of autocross on the phone with one of their reps, and the next thing he new, his policy was dropped.

I'm sure they'll cover you in the case of a legit street accident, so if it's the best rate you could get, don't sweat it. I've just heard stories about dropped policies after some incident or another (or nothing at all).

Did you try progressive? I've heard more good stories than bad about them. I also know a few people who've gotten competitive rates and good service from State Farm.
