Default Any harm to the tranny if I use heavier oil?? Reg or synthetic?

I want to change my tranny fluid on my 1992 prelude and since 5th gear grinds I want to try a 10w-40 or 50 in the tranny instead of a 10w-30. I know gm stuff is good but I want to try this first before I lay down the cash for the gm stuff. Also can I use synthetic insted of regular oil?? Mainly I want to make sure a heavier oil won't do any harm.

You've been mislead.

Motor oil as described by vicosities will not work in your transmission, it's WAY too light. You need gear oil. Red line makes good gear oil.

http://www.redlineoil.com/

It sounds to me like your synchro is toast and buying/replacing tranny fluid may be a lost cause.

yup. that's what the helms manual says.

you can try syncromesh if you want, you don't need to get the GM version: they have a penzoil version at autozone that costs half as much. however, SM may not be the best thing for the overall health of your tranny, look at the syncromesh thread for some insight as to why.

heavier oil won't cure the grind though, but it won't hurt the tranny either, so long as it isn't way too heavy. a 40 weight should be fine, however, i doubt that you'll see an improvement, and theoretically at least, you'll be robbing yourself of some HP. could be .002 hp, in the end, and numerically insignificant.

The Honda manual states that petroleum based 10W30 may be used in an interim or as a stopgap should Honda MTF not be available.
Synthetic oils or synthetic gear oils as a whole should never be used.
It's a Honda, stick with Honda MTF.

80w90 is not 8x thicker (when cold) or 3x thicker when warm than a 10w30. I believe there is an equivalency coefficient when comparing motor oil and gear oil, unfortunately i don't know what that number is.

redline does make a good gear oil, but lots of redline users experience some unpleasant shifting when using it in a honda tranny. The bottom line is if you're not road racing, the best MTF to use in a honda tranny is honda MTF.

in the end, the difference between honda MTF and 10w-30 is the additive package used in the MTF that are specifically added to provide better protection in a transmission vs. an engine. But like i said earlier, the helms manual specifies that you can use a 10w30 engine oil in the transmission.

Maybe it's that I'm slow or not a fast driver but my tranny has 155k miles and a lot of days at the track, and I've used nothing but Honda MTF. No grinds. And smooth shifting.

i'm using honda MTF at the track myself, i just hear ugly things about how it is shear happy under extreme conditions. I try to counteract that by changing the fluid often, but it's a little disconcerting.

I would NEVER use pertroleum based motor oil in the tranny, ever.

I used Redline gear oil in my '89 and it worked like a charm. 220k+ miles.

When the synchros give out, it doesn't matter what you use though.

I'd say - heat any liquid hot enough and it'll do something nasty. For everything I've heard about Honda MTF being inadequate, my personal experience has been to the contrary. Conversly, everyone unanimously touts Redline tranny oils but the friends I know who've used it have had grinding problems, shifting problems and a host of other maladies that magically disappeared once they switched back to Honda MTF.
Like you, I change my Honda MTF often (every 2-3 oil changes when I'm at the track 1 weekend/month or more ) but it still comes out crystal clear everytime.

blah...or should i just run honda MTF and change it every 3 oil changes?

I wouldn't use for a prolonged duration, but if you're in a bind, it'll work. Above and beyond that, I'd suggest you take issue with Honda who publishes the same information in every model owner's manual.
Like I've already said, of the people I personally know who've used Redline, they had nothing but issues using it. From that experience, I wouldn't use it, since my 6 year use of Honda MTF has been positive.
On your last point, you're right - once the synchro is gone it's gone.

It's just Honda's MO.

The manual says use Honda only power steering fluid but I never had any problems using anything else.

It says use Honda Genuine everything if I remember correctly. They would though, wouldn't they?

Like I said, I PERSONALLY used the Redline in my car and nothing ever happened besdes prolonged intervals to achange the tranny fluid and more positive shifts, if Honda can shift anymore positively. Then again, I am old school, things could very well have changed in the last fifteen years.

run honda MTF and change it according to the manual's spec. Make necessary adjustments to the interval if you're hot lapping/HPDE active, otherwise, honda MTF should be fine.

the shear issue we were talking about is only a problem when you're running at redline all day during a 6 hr hpde (or even 30 minute sprint race + practive + qualifying), and putting 120 HARD miles on the car at a time. for regular driving, even spirited driving, i don't think it's a big deal.

We get bad transmissions all the time using Redline.. I do not recommend using redline. It gums up around the synchro meshing and contact surfaces. Use what Honda recommends and that is Genuine MTF period IMO. If you have a 5th gear problem..simply fix it the correct way. A fluid fix is a fluke because the worn part is still there and needs to get replaced..bottom line. So it buys you a month or two?? Just my opinion

I could make the same argument against using Redline - after all, it's all marketing. That said, there are two things that are close to certain, undeniable facts as far as the black magic of fluids goes, and they are :

1, Honda MTF is, for whatever reason, superior tranny fluid, for Hondas than anything else on the market. Be it black magic, formulation, etc. Honda MTF simply works the best, bar none.

2, Honda Coolant is probably the best manufacture formulated coolant/antifreeze on the market - I know guys that run it in their bikes, Ferraris, etc.

Those two Honda products are worth the money. Hands down.

The rest, I'll concede to being in the dark. But as far as which tranny fluid to use in a Honda, it's Honda brand MTF everytime. I'd never reccomend otherwise.

haha, I just put in some ac delco syncromesh and the grind has singificatly reduced, and I've only driven it for an hour or so. This is the same stuff as the penzoil/gm syncromesh and smells the sam but is half the price. I love how it feels now, so much better than before no notchyness and I can shift into first without being at a complete stop, handy for all the stop and go traffic I'm in.

Thats the understatment of the year. I swaped that stuff out after 4k miles because it was grinding so badly. I tried Honda's mtf and then synchromesh. Synchromesh keeps everything from grinding now, but only if I change it about every 6 months.

I agree with you on using The honda MTF, however hondas coolant is not the best on the market. Here is why I am saying this, because Toyota coolant is the same as hondas only red. So you would have to say that Toyota's is just as superior.

How would I know anything about Toyota's coolant? I don't own a Toyota. Nonetheless, I'll revise my statement on account of your epistomological critque, eg, Honda coolant is the best manufacture formulated coolant that I'm aware of.

If anyone is curious here is an approximate viscosity table between oil types.

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/visc.html

Also, just so you know (to whomever recommended the Redline gear oils) you DO NOT use the 75w-90 or ANY of the numbered oils. Because these are detremental to syncros (aka they eat brass alive). These oils are designed for DIFFERENTIALS and should NEVER be used in a manual transmission. If you want to use a Redline oil use a mix of MTL and MT-90. MTL by itself is actually too slippery for our transmissions and causes a lot of gear lockouts. Using the mix or pure MT-90 is the only Redline gear oils to be used in your tranny.

Don't use GM Syncromesh unless you absolutely need to cure your shifting. But you know at that point your tranny is on it's way out.
