I have a 96 Accord LX. the check engine light just came on yesterday. CAn someone help me with links to running diagnostic checks and common problems associated with this? I am new to the accord world since I have only had this car for 1 year. Thanks

i have a 96 ex and had the same problem....how i checked mine was, there is a lil blue plug under the glove box that you take out and there should be a plug in there that u can jump with a paperclip and your check engine light will blink a code....u need to jump it and then turn the ignition to the on position (don't turn it over) i have a list of all the codes if you figure out which code it is throwing you...

long light means 10s and short ligh means 1s.. for example code 12 the light comes on pause for a sec or so... than two light should pop up one after another ..like blinkkkkk.......blink. blink.. = 12

Last night, I popped that blue plug off and jumped the end of the plug. when I turned the key, it gave me 1 blink, so i assume that my main o2 sensor is shot (ECU code 1). Is that the most common thing to happen when that light goes on? What is involved in fixing this problem? How much am I looking at? Any help appreciated. Thanks

well jack up the car and check the 02sensor. it might have bad connections. if it does just make sure the connections are tight... mine used to comes on and off all the time... i found out to be my 02 so i jack up the car and found out that my 02 sensor connection wass lose, so i fix it, now no more problems.

a word of advice....the first time i jumped mine i also got the same code and i was pretty sure it wasn't that cause it was almost brand new so i jumped it again and got a different code....i didn't have a good connection while jumping it the first time so make sure you test it more than once to make sure it is popping the right code....

It doesn't matter what's most common. It only matters what's wrong with YOUR car.

If you've never done it before, maybe code 10 (intake air temperature sensor)??
Short blinks are really pretty short - much less than 1 second.

Even if it's code 1, it can still be dirty, loose connections, or cut wires, even a loose plug on the ECU. Check that stuff before you buy any new $ensor$.

Thansk for your help everyone. I checked again last night and got the correct code. I didn't jump the plug correctly the first time. It flashed 7 long flashes before a pause and then repeated. I am pretty certain they were long flashes, so the code is #70, auto tranny malfunction. What is the problem/cure for this code? Now what do I do?

Was the D4 light flashing out it's own code at the same time? That can narrow it down. Or (since it's OBD-2) you can have AutoZone read it.

Then you could use a Helm book for your car. I got that for '98, but it's a whole different generation. Probably the same general descriptions are OK, but the details about what to check out have to come from the proper year repair book.

D4 was flashing at the same time. I wasn't sure of the relevance of that, but what does that mean? It was flashing almost in unison with the CEL.

Do it again & read the D4 code. I don't see 70 in my list, but maybe for a '96?? Or maybe get AutoZoned to read the OBD-2 code.

For example...
P0720 (CEL=70 while D4=9) is no shift 2-3 & lock-up clutch not engaging ('98).

You'll still want a Helm book for your year, so you know what to check after you read the code.
