Default burning oil?

A while back I was having a problem with my 96 GSR where it would hesitate right at about 5600 rpm's. Everybody was curious as to what was happening. I changed the oil and everything was fine. What I didn't notice then, but have noticed in more recent oil changes, is that I was about a quart low. I have noticed that if I check my oil about a month after I do an oil change that I am about 1/2 a quart low. Fortunatlly for me I work at car dealership and can have as much 10-40 as I want (shhhh). I plan on getting an engine rebuild and going turbo when money, and legal matters (keeping my license) permit.
I bought the car in October of 2000 with 116,000 miles on it, and as of now it has over 143,000 miles. Is this missing oil common on engies with so many miles? Anubody else have this problem? Please let me know if this topic has already been covered. TIA

I meant normal if your engine is in need of a rebuild and has over 143,000 miles, and you will race anything that moves. Don't take that last part the wrong way though, I don't beat up my car, I just like running it through the gears. Also, The motor still runs very strong; there are no problems except the missing oil. Oh yeah, I park in a garage everyday and the car does not leak oil.

That's okay, I love it when people ask about it, I thought now one else had heard of it. Here goes. I saw the add for it in a magizine (the actual Jacobs add, not in a Summit catolog or anything) so I called Jacobs. The guy tells me, "Well, it's usually $600 (something, I don't remember) but I can give it to you for $550 (or something, don't remember)." I say "Wow, that's a lot of money, you know Stylin Concepts is advertising the same thing for $325 in this very same magizine, why do you think that is?" He replies, "They are probably just selling the unit and not the required modified cap, and the 8.5mm spark plug wires that go with it." So I say okay, call up Stylin Concepts, they say, "The $325 is just for the unit, but I can throw in the modified cap and the plug wires (both from Jacobs, so it is literally the same stuff) for about $60." I say thanks and send them a money order for like 400 and some dollars (guess what, don't remember).

I installed my self (which isn't very hard, even easier if you know what you are doing, I didn't) I couldn't find room for it under the hood (that ties in with the not knowing what I was doing thing) so I take off the bumper, drill some holes, and wa-la! There is a small bumper on the driver side of the bumper from the Ice pak pushing up on it. If I drive nice, I can get 30 miles to the gallon in the city, better on the highway. (nice driving = not running through the gears a couple of times a day) Speaking of which, about that missing oil...
Any more suggestions. Sorry this is so long, if anyone has a hard time reading it, pass fifth grade.

Man it has taken me forever to track down this problem doing searches but I think I have finally found it. I hit 5500 rpms last night and I was met with major hesitation and a CEL ... now after asking around I think it is the oil. Here is what the dipstick looked like
---------------------------------------------------
| ||||||||||
| Oil | O O

-----------------------------------------------------

So I think that I was a little low.

You might want to have your buds at the dealership run a compression test on it. Also, you said that you use 10W-40? You might want to change to 5W-30.
