Well I was really bored today, so I decided to clean my IACV, and man was I in shock....here is what I found...

Yyyyeeeaaahhhh.....that's what happens when you clean it. Is it idling better now?

 

Yucky. What'd you clean it with? A pressure washer?

 

well, not really, it is doing somewhat better, but not as much as I thought, I still have pretty rough idle, kind of sputters a bit

wraped the plug connector in a paper towel, secured it with a rubber band, used seafoam deep creep, and sparyed it very liberally, let it soak for a while, and voila

 

I hope that sea foam cleaner didn't ruin that gasket on it. From the picture it doesn't look like it's damaged. I'd check it just for peace of mine.

Usually idle problems on our cars arise because the plunger inside the cylinder of the IACV gets fucked up and loose and the air just breezes right past it in huge gusts. The screen just keeps debris out...it doesn't do a whole lot as far as changing the idle characteristics.

The internal parts of the IACV are what makes it work. If they're not sealing properly, there won't be an improvement with a cleaning. When one is bad, I've never seen anything work besides replacement or a rebuild; and I don't even know if there is a rebuild kit for Hondas.

but how would I know if it were a good IACV with good internal parts to make my idle alot smoother? it still kind of sputters when at idle, and it annoys the **** out of me

Are you sure you don't have any vacuum leaks though? While it's usually an IACV, a vac leak can cause idle problems too.

And, yes, the IACV is pretty pricey; but if you narrow it down to that, it's well worth it to fix the problem. For $10 or whatever a yard charges, you might want to try it first, you may save some bucks.

usually you will get an engine light if the interals are bad i believe..... (code 14)

as far as gettin one on ebay for about $10,that is true in a way, but they say its like $20 for shipping or some outrageous amount. I got an extra one layin around for $20shipped from when i was trying to solve my idle problem if interested I also have a FITV as well.

i might be interested..PM me, what is the FITV?

 

FITV is the Fast Idle Thermo Valve...its located under the throttlebody and controls cold idle start up. It has a coolant line running to it.

 

is your idle rough all the time or only when u start it up or only after it warms up? if its just kind of rough and not fluctuating its most likely not the FITV or IACV or a vaccum leak. It could be somethin like a o2sensor goin bad, bad distributor/dist coil/rotor, plugs or plug wires. have u done a tune up recently?

 

 

9 times out of 10, a dirty IACV will not cause a rough idle. you have other issues if you have idle fluctuation, etc.

wasup...dang...my iacv looked just likes yours and after i cleaned it with some seafoam the car ran really nice...fixed my problems...hope everything works out for you

 

it is rough all the time, no i have not done a tune up lately, i really need one, I was pretty productive this weekend though, cleaned my IACV, seafoamed, coolant flush, oil change, and deep creep on my IM and TB, also i cleaned my k&n air filter, man was it gross. but my idle is still not smoothe like i want it to be. I changed the plug wires back in September, i do neede new plugs, o2 sensor is about a year old. rebuilt distributor was put on a year ago this month, so im thinking bad IACV, but i am really lost. It isn't that bad, it just really bugs me, it idles at about 400 RPM when warm, and it sputters, doesnt fluctuate very much, im gonna change plugs tomorrow, ill let ya know what happens.
