Is it ok for me to start off with 2nd gear?
Sometime when I come to a completely stop at stop sign....I start back up again on 2nd gear instead of first. Is that ok or it will damage the tranny?
im a newbie driver as well, but when i come to a <U>complete</U> stop i always go back to first. if i am going over speed bumps i always go use 2nd but iono im a newbie!
it seems to me that you would have to rev higher and slip the clutch when starting in second, resulting in more clutch wear than just starting in first. START IN FIRST. that's why it's there. You should also use it for going over speed bumps. You won't have to slip the clutch as much because as that speed you make more torque in first gear than in second.
I asusme the rsx has a 1st gear lockout when you're above 5mph or something like that like most cars. So if you come ot a complete stop start in first, if you don't come to a complete stop and are still locked outta first (>5mph) then use second. It's pretty obvious, first gear is there for a reason, don't wanna start in second and bog all of the time. If you're too lazy to row the gears you should have gotten an auto.

you are right.....I hate the fact that when I don't stop the car completely, the tranny would not let me get into 1st gear. I thought that just because of my tranny is mess up or something....but now I know it is not. Thanks for all the replies

u could do the same thing i 3rd but if u come 2 a complete stop its best 2 just use 1st know if u were still rolling buts going slow u can use second its nothing wrong with that specially if u were doing more than 10-20 miles per hour u would burn more gas going back 2 1st gear as opposed to going to 2nd or 3rd gear

don't do it from a dead stop . its a ok if u were trying to test your clutch to see it was going out but don't do that everyday and never start from 2nd if your are doing 0mph if u are already rolling more than 10 miles per hour u can shift info 2nd gear and not cause ne problems to your drivetrain or clutch i have done it and being doing on many cars

Ive never had a problem downshifting to 1st while moving . Maybe you arent revmatching properly?</TD></TR></TABLE>
It's a safety thing, so when you are moving you don't accidently shift into first if you are trying to hit 3rd and overrev your engine for example. Some cars don't have a lockout, usually they are older though.

when you lug the engine, using too low of a gear, you put alot of load on the bearings. This could cause premature wear.
However, it's possible to start of from 2nd and not lug the engine however, like he said, it puts additional wear on your clutch.

How does lugging the engine put extra wear on bearings? It seems like an urban legend to me, noone has explained the reasoning behind it before.

It's not an urban legend. To be honest, I really don't know why it put wear on the bearings. It has something to do with high center loads I think whatever that means.
I think it was in HOTROD magazine where they had an issue of bearing analysis. That's were I picked it up from. I could find out for you, but I'm not.
If you have time, please find out for us.
