A couple of my friends insist on riding without a license. What happens if you get pulled over without a M1? Or after dark or on the freeway with just a permit.

They can tow your bike on the spot. If you have your permit and its a cop thats partial to riders he prolly wont tow it. But if you have NOTHING your **** is getting towed, on top of no liscense or operating out of class(permit) ticket you'll get. $$$$

Usually when the "squids" around me do not bother getting a license, then that usually means they wouldn't go out of their way to get insurance. 1:4 in CA do not have insurance.
edit: or I can be generalizing and I may be wrong, and I'm sorry

It sounded like you were suggesting that one could not get insurance because one only had a permit. I know for a fact that plenty of places give insurances to people with only permits(how else can you learn)
I see what your saying now and I agree with you.

i only have my permit .. and it was expired .. and i was riding at night. I got pulled over he asked for license, registration, and insurance ... which is weird cause at least in WA, you only need insurance if you're paying off a bike from a dealership. This cop was just stupid and didn't know much about the laws with motorcycles. I didn't have my registration either, but i didn't get a ticket for that. All i got was running a red light. Seems like the people i ride with up here, none of them have their permit, let alone their license.

Socal cops can be realy dicks but if you're riding w/o a liscense thats pretty bad. Most that dont have a liscense probably dont have insurance either. IMHO, I'm glad cops tow these riders bikes and ticket them. I've heard plenty of stories of people getting their bikes towed for not having a m1.
i pity anyone who rides without alicense... cmon... its not just the license, but the **** you learn from taking the course, or passing the test! sheesh people... im sure none of us on here are these people, but yea. i have a few friends with the biggest baddest bikes (r1, zx10r) and dont even have their licenses. just gets on my nerves a little bit. youd figure if yer gonna spend the money on insurance, bike payments, and be into the sport, youd at least have the proper training.

I dunno about the training part 'cause those couple of friends that ride w/o a license are a lot better than me and have a lot more experience. One of them is on his 3rd bike and has been riding for about 10 years. Anyways... isn't there like jail time or something? I just wanna convince them that they need a license.

Insurance is required in CA, no exceptions
If an unlicensed/insured rider took me out, they better be expecting a call from my lawyer

See, I don't understand this. It's obvious that they could easily pass the test, why not just take it.
It only took me 23 dollars and four hours of sitting in a waiting room to get mine, it's one of the easier things about riding.

They've tried the circle and failed a couple of times so thats why they're not getting their license. Also, they don't wanna take time out to go through MSF for it.
MY first bike was a KLX-400 (kawi bought the rights to put the green plastics on the DRZ400 for 2003.) I was riding down i Sierra in Fontana when i got pulled over by a moto cop. I took off my helmet and started to take out my wallet when i noticed that a car also came. just as my hand started to come out of my pocket, he pulled his gun on me trying to convince me that the bike i was riding, my bike, that was 110% legal was stolen and that the car was there to take me to jail. this went on for about 20 min until he finally decided that before he arrests me maby he should call in the vin number and see who it was registered to. Duuuuuu! everything checked out ok so he wrote me a fix it ticket saying my brake light was flickering !@#$

I went to MSF and have had my M1 for like 3 years but those circles at the DMV are no joke on a sport bike. No problemo on a cruiser.

Just tell them to borrow someone's 250. Surely they know somebody with one.

Yeah, one of the ladies we ride with has a 03 ninja 250 but there's no way in hell that she'll ever let any of us ride that ****. She thinks we'll freakin trash it or something. I dunno where she gets that from.

I know... but I really don't wanna see my friends get in trouble. You know what I mean? Like one of them is soooo down on his luck. The only thing going for him (he found out his girl is cheating on him w/some rich fooking player) is his bike. He has a pretty shitty job and doesn't make a lot of money. And the only gear he has is all hand me downs from the rest of us. We got him some mods for Christmas and thats it. I don't wanna say I feel sorry for him cause if he gets pulled over w/o a license, its his fault. But I wanna show them the consequences.

Well, since money is tight for him, do like you did for Christmas, have a bunch of people chip in, and pay for his MSF course (or at least part of it). That way, you're helping a friend, and he's riding legal.
