Another attempted theft! THIEVES DIE!!!!!!!!!
I was whoring up H-T as usual with my lights off in my the room (right next to the garage) about to go to sleep. All of a sudden my alarm goes off, the 2-way pager on my alarm going crazy. So I'm thinking... "Oh ****!" I open the door to the garage. I leave the lights off for about 3 sec to see if there are any ambient lights in the garage. Nothing, darkness. I shut off the alarm. At first I think it's nothing so I come back to my room. Something doesn't feel right. So I open the door to the garage again. I find the side door unlocked. so I think.......................OH ****!!!!!!................... At the moment I have devise a quick method of keeping the dead-bolt immobilized from outside tampering. The alarm is armed and I'm borrowing my cousin's club. I hope I can sleep through the night...
your car is garaged or is it outside and you're next to the garage? go roll a log or something under a tire just in case they try to roll it away. regardless, keep it good lookout tonight.

If they are on your property, then unless you are in Texas, you better not shoot.

first thing you should do is call the police. do the right thing. shooting someone is asking for bigtime problems. if you miss, you think they wont come back for revenge on you, your family, or your property? secure the car as best you can and get the cops involved. think before you do something stupid.

As of right now I am going to permamently immobilize the deadbolt to the side door. I'm a light sleeper so if anyone opens the mechanically operated garage I'd wake up. It's a good thing I commute between SD and LA very randomly and regularly for school and work. (keeps the ******* guessing) The worst part is for the previous 2 weeks up to last night I didn't even bother to close my windows and lock the car, yet enable the alarm. I'm glad I did that now and it paid off...as well as spending a crap-load on a 2-way-paging-alarm.
dude at least they didn't get it. Lock that thing up TIIGHT! Set up some things that will make noise if someone comes around too for the next month maybe, like a trip wire of sort.

Seriously when laser-tripp bombs and claymores become legal; I am so setting like 50 of them up everywhere around the perimeter of my house.
Sense of security rules.

and you might want to move the car to a different location that you don't go to very much like uncle's or a G-parent
Good luck, But don't shoot anyone unless your life is in jeopardy.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by Laws of Self-Defense »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Defense of home. To the law, your home is your castle. It is your place of last retreat. You are not required to retreat from a threat in your home. When defending your home against a burglary, authorities rarely question the use of force¾ even deadly force. Burglary is legally defined as:
the breaking and entering,
without consent,
of the dwelling house of another,
while it is occupied,
at night,
with the intent to commit any felony or larceny therein.
If you believe a burglar is serious physical threat to you or your family, the law allows you to use whatever force you feel is necessary to neutralize the threat. However, here again, one must be careful since not all intruders are burglars. Someone may be intoxicated and enter the wrong apartment. A firefighter may be trying to break-in to warn you of a fire in your home. Wildly shooting at anyone who trespasses onto your property is not reasonable self-defense. If the mistaken use force is reasonable under the circumstance and no one is seriously injured. the law will generally excuse the action. However, remember that the victim may still pursue you in civil court.
The use of force is justifiable only if the actor first requests the intruder to desist from his interference with the property, unless the actor reasonably believes that:
Such request would be useless,
It would be dangerous to the actor or another person to make the request, or
Substantial harm will be done to the physical condition of the property which is sought to be protected before the request can effectively be made.
The use of deadly force is not justifiable in the defense of premises unless the actor reasonably believes that:
The person against whom the force is used is attempting to dispossess the actor of his/her dwelling otherwise than under a claim of right to its possession; or
The person against whom the force is used is attempting to commit or consummate arson, burglary, robbery or other criminal theft or property destruction; except that
Deadly force does not become justifiable under A or B unless:
The person against whom it is used has used or threatened deadly force against, or in the presence of, the actor or
The use of force other than deadly force to prevent the commission or consummation of the crime would expose the actor, or another in his/her presence, to substantial danger of serious bodily harm.
These are defenses to criminal charges which will be brought against you if you defended yourself. Even if the prosecutor or police decide not to bring criminal charges against you or if you are successful in proving that you were protecting yourself as permitted under certain provisions of the criminal code, the attacker if injured still may attempt to bring a civil suit to recover for any medical expenses or injuries incurred.

those laws are crazy.
Guy breaks into house, guy is holding a 9mm or similar weapon in his hand or pants. you ask him to kindly leave while pointing a .45 caliber or larger weapon at him. In response he draws his weapon and you fire on him, hitting him in the shoulder. He quickly hits the ground and you pounce on him and tie his hands together with zipties and call the cops. cops haul him off, and then later you see that you are being SUED because the guy that broke into your house with a gun and was pulling it out, got slapped with some pretty hefty medical bills for the half dollar size hole you left in his shoulder. this is pretty ****** retarted if you ask me. Shoot the ****** and bury the body or find a pig farm.

I think you need some demobilizing land mines right outside that side door.
And the log under the tire actually sounds like a good idea because unless the spent the time to look under the car, etc. while their blood is pmpin so hard...or you hear them crank it up.

Opie, who is beginning to think that even a garage doesnt mean anything anymore.</TD></TR></TABLE>
A friend of mine who's spend many years in law-enforcement is suggesting I get a gun. I'm seriously starting to think about it. I'm not a fan of guns, and I don't really want anything to do with them, but we'll see.
When even the garage in your home is not safe anymore, then the last resort is that you get a gun.
If you see a thief in the middle of stealing your car from your garage, are you supposed to just stand there, or can you shoot him?

you can't just shoot him. you have to be able to prove that you felt dangered or an act of agression. if he had a bat and you really thought he was going to use it, you could shoot him, but the cops will definitely be asking questions.

Wow, that sucks, then. So, if they have no weapons, and my life is not in danger, I just stand and watch, as they drive away my car?
I imagine I have to go after them, somehow.

Or use this oppurtunity to catch the ******.
Leave the garage door open like you mistakingly forgot to close it. Pull the lightbulbs in the garage so they cannot be turned on. Then get in the backseat under a dark blanket and just wait.
However, at this point the thief is probably reading H-T anyways and won't be coming back.

wrong. you can also use force to protect your property, not just yourself or your family. this includes, houses, cars, pets, furniture, electronics, etc. anything in your home, if it is in danger of getting destroyed or taken, you have the right to use whatever force you feel is neccessary. no cop will question you, in fact, they will thank you for making one less low life on the streets.
