Default DIY: Red out your tails, or any color...

I wasn't sure if this is the right forum, or if i should even post this, but back when i had my mx6, i redded out my tail lights and I had a lot of commentors on my tail lights.

They were mostly asking where to buy them rather that tell me they looked nice. I guess that was a compliment??

well anyways, someone asked about getting all red tails on their dc2 like the 98+ model??
I'm here just to share info with you all.

First you'll need to go to some store that sells spray paint. I went to walmart for my paint. The paint you need is the translucent kind, the stuff you spray on model cars and such. I got some candy apple red translucent paint with 1506 on the top. Clear coat too for gloss. And some fine grit wet sand paper. And well, tape and a place to spray the tail light with.
You can either take your tail light off, or leave it on, doesnt matter, as long as you're protecting the surrounding area from paint overspray.
Do a few brushes of wet sanding on the tail light, be careful not to overdo it. Could turn out ugly.

Once it's soft and smoothe without swirls, take your can of paint and spray about 2 or 3 thin and even coats onto the tail light. Allowing about 10 mins intervals before spraying again. Leave it for about 3-5 hours, depends on your paint, and then come back and do some wet sanding on it again, but again, very careful and just a few brushes. This is to prevent orange peel and fisheye'ing. Spray another 2 coats, and then let it sit for 3-5 hours, then wet sand it even less than before. Then apply clear coat, apply as much as you'd like, I did about 3 coats. Let it sit overnight, then wet sand with 2000 grit, and buff it with a soft cloth and soft compound, and wax or whatever youd like.

Hope this helps someone!

post your tricks/pointers too if ya have any. I don't have pics of my redded out mx6 tails, but I just did a test on my spare cracked g2 tail. Will take pics when i'm done.

PS - No, it does not blink orange, amber, or yellow, it lights up a nice red.
