Just Installed -> Kenwood KDC 7011 (discontinued) + Infinity Reference 6002i 6.5"
First things first...I'm no audiophile. I just want clean sounds and wanted something to replace the blown stock rear speakers on my 93 VTEC w/ some Infinity Reference 6002i's.
I do have to say, the 4th gen ludes have nothing on the 5th gen ludes in terms of sound quality in the stock stereo systems. I had a 97 type sh and my wife had a 99' and a 98' lude. For ~$25k cars, the stereo systems of the 5th gen ludes delivered some crisp clean sound.
While I was at it, I went ahead and replaced the headunit with a Kenwood KDC 7011 (with the phantom face). The KDC 7011 (discountinued) was a used unit that came off from my wife's 99 lude which was totalled in a wreck.
Impressions
a) The 6002i's really shine only w/ more power (doh!). Using my stock HU, the 6002i's barely sounded better than my stock speakers before they blew. After I installed the Kenwood HU, there was a night and day difference.
b) However, the 6002i's suck at producing bass. For those of you who like music with more bass, i'd look elsewhere for speakers. for alt. rock, it's fine, but when i play hip hop, it's a bit disappointing. these have no trouble producing the highs though.
c) Installing the 6002i's was easy, but the key is using the stock spkr base. without it, the magnet would have not cleared the trunk tension bars, not to mention having to make accomodations to install them on the deck. I've probably done about 4-5 rear deck spkr installs on the 4th gen preludes and I always try to use the stock spkr base for ease of install.
d) The Kenwood HU had to be installed with a lot of crimping but using Helms manual, it was easy to match up the wires. I basically matched the wires of the Kenwoods to the plug that comes out of the stock HU. The colors do not match, so the Helms manual really came in handy. I know that back in 2000, this HU cost about $250-$300. For the money, it's a great HU, producing 44W X 4.
Next up...the front door spkrs..the passenger side already blew and I'm thinking of replacing them w/ some BA FX6-H, which is catered to fit in tight Honda door panels.
I hope this helps those of you out there replacing stereo components.
