Default Cylinder 3 goes poof!

deep breath.....

bone stock 01 itr, 78K miles.

so i'm going to work tuesday morning. about 80mph when my car fall on it's face pretty hard. pull into work to check for the obvious signs... nothing, except some oil splattered on the rear of the car. plenty of oil, no leaks down below... hmm? wtf right? i lim it to my buddies place. we pull the plugs and number 3 has no more ignitor, electrode, nothing. all gone and it's covered in oil. it's the only plug like this, all others are fine. well the head got yanked today, and the third cylider was full of oil, but nothing was wrong w/ the wall or the piston. the valves were jacked. 2 of them had nice sized holes in them. besides that, everything looked ok. the pistons will be pulled tomorrow to put some new rings on, and the head is being taken care of now (new valves, seals, re-surfacing and cleaning etc... ). while the head's off the timing belt, water pump and all the drive belts will be replaced.

now for my question......

WTF??? detonation? it's bone stock! never modified at all! did the pcv valve's guts get sucked into the cylinder? did the spark plug jus go **** up, crack off and cause all of fthis? the plugs were only about 5k old. all of the injectors were firing. we don't have a flow bench, but i can't imagine one just siezed up? any ideas?

thanks,
jeremy

Tell your mechanic to LAY OFF THE NAWSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11!!!one

Just kidding, welcome (again?) to the site. Where is Collinsville?

Where are you thinking the oil came from? Valve, Piston ring, or other? You said the valves were 'jacked', any chance it was coming from there while you limped home?

*shrug* That sure does sound unusual. Good luck.

honeslty, I would take it back to him and tell him what happened and in soo many words demand him to fix it since he is a mechanic.

I dunno man, sounds like rings, but what happened is very weird.

well the way i see it is like this. i bought the car as is. i checked it out the best i could. as far as i know, it was a freak accident. there are no signs that point to someone causing it. as much as i'd love to have him flip the bill, it's my car, my bill. sucks, but i'm a big boy. this is in no way the worst that has happend to a car i've owned. not sure if you could imagine, but i drove a 482whp (pump gas) evo to work every day for close to a year. talk about a lot getting f'ed up!!!! this one's got me boggled though? i've never heard of a spark plug tip breaking off, but.....? or the pcv valve theory?

I would suspect a head gasket failure.

My best guess is that the #3 injector was flowing lower/less than the others and it simply leaned out and got very hot, melting the electrode and damaging the valves.

On the occassion that I've heard of this happening, it is usually #3.
The other think to look for is a crack in the valve seal area of the head after something like this has happened.
I'd suggest also having the injectors cleaned and flow checked at some place like RC engineering before putting it all back together.

Best of luck. Ed

i ran 12.5/12.7 w/ exhaust, mbc and engine managment. i never ran it after it ws built. i decided to sell it, so i didn't want to break anything else. it was an easy 11 second pump gas car though. i beat the hell out of bikes left and right.

the more i think about it, the more i'm thinking that the injector in #3 just went south.

That does sound likely, probably dirty injector or maybe a little sticky.

You could send them to RC Engineering for flow analysis, but that sounds like overkill for a stock R.

yeah, the local acura dealer has 9 new injectors in stock, so i'm just going to replace them all to be safe. the head is done and the pistons are out, just waiting on the new rings from acura. it should be good for quite a while after this. granted, it's going to still be "stock," but that's how i like this car.
