Default Car Died driving

I was driving home one day and after about 20 miles my car died on the highway. It did not stall right away but the rpms started to drop and i could not give it gas which indicated to me that no gas was going to the engine or so I thought. I pulled off to the side of the road popped the hood and looked down. I saw that my exhaust manifold was glowing red. I had it towed and the tow truck driver told me maybe intake checked it and it is good. I just put on new cap, plugs and wires checked them and i have spark. My next guess is the catylitic convertor. Im trailering it to my dads farm this weekend to put it on the hoist. Any other ideas other then the catylitic convertor. I'm also going to check the fuel pump.

timing belt broke? Does it sound slighly different when you crank it. Like cranks a little more freely.

Ignition coil maybe...happened to me a couple weeks ago. Sounds the same as what happened to me minus the red hot manifold.

Did you notice what the water temp. was at the time? A friend's eclipse GST ovearheated somehow and didn't even shut off, but when he turned it off and popped the hood, his exhaust manifold was glowing red. It turned out that his fan never kicked on while he was mashing on the freeway and when he got off, he noticed his water temp in the red.

Anyway, after he fixed the problem and changed the oil, it was ok for a week, then he started getting rod knock and days later the engine spun a rod bearing, so this is a possibile worst case scenario, but hopefully not the case.

Check ur main fuel relay, if its busted it wont turn on the fuel pump.

Hope that helps

Dude, MORE than likely, it won't be your fuel relay as those tend to go out gradually. Chances are you're looking at your ignition coil and/or ignitor like somebody else mentioned...

Those tend to go out instantaneously - Your engine will still crank, but you won't see any spark. Check for spark to double-check, and then you should probably go ahead and replace both the coil and ignitor (when one goes, the other isn't far behind). Cost is about $100 from Auto Zone or Checker, complete.

You might check the timing belt like someone else mentioned just for giggles, but if the belt gave up at highway speeds, you'd probably be hearing a nice racket from your pistons/valves...

Any word on the damage?

My ignitor and/or coil went out a while back so I can relate...
