uhh, disconnect the battery for a minute.

Or, pull the radio fuse.

No way, 30 seconds is fine.

Aren't 95's obd1? I thought you only need to reset the ECU on obd2's?

Only use of reseting an ECU is to clear a trouble code.

Should you reset it only when the engine is warm? what if you had to have the battery unhooked for a few days..I plugged it all back up and now my car is running rich when I start it, puffing black smoke, a/f all the way on last green bar, I shut it off and haven't messed with it since..is this normal? what should I do.

It shouldn't matter wether the car is warm or not.

Are getting a CEL?

Why did you reset the ECU in the first place? Was the car running properly, without CEL, before you reset the ECU?

Wait a second, you are this guy: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1137197

You may have other issues.

I unhooked the battery because I was unhooking the ecu so I could get to the sunroof drain outlet in the floor panels...I put it all back together, fire it up, it smells like I'm dumping gas and its puffing black smoke pretty good, so I shut it off

I wasn't trying to start two discussions, but based on the topic of discussion being ecu resetting I was wondering if I was doing it correctly based on the info everyone was giving this topic starter. my bad man, not trying to stir up anything

You were wondering if you did what correctly? You had the ECU out of the car.

well is it typical to put it back in, fire it up and it to puff black smoke as its relearning? thats what I'm guessing is not normal. I'm not throwing any CEL's so I'm kinda stuck trying to figure out a starting point. I appreciate the help guys you guys are great

Disconnecting the battery terminal doesnt hurt anything. As far as a re-learn...anytime you reset the ecu the learned memory you car has stored is dumped. Your car is running in a default mode until it re-learns your driving habits. Your car doesnt run of this memory at cold start up though. your car runs in open loop meaning that the computer is not talking to your O2 sensors (OBD2) and it cant tell what the air/fuel ratio is... at this point it relies on its PROM to run. the prom runs until about 600 degrees which is when your O2 sensors will become closed loop with the ecu. Hope this helps.... if its black smoke did it have trouble starting up you probably flooded it out.

no it starts up just like it always does, idles like it always does, it just is puffing black smoke and smells like gas. I shut it down and didn't continue as I had to go to work.
