Anyone ever done ignition timing tuning on a dyno?
I dont mean like advancing it two degrees or whatever...but with something like a Hondata or PowerFC. Where there any subtantial gains or are most of the gains from fuel/vtec crossover tuning.
BTW this is to help me in the decision to keep the Hondata or get a VAFC

if you can get someone to make you a regular chip with a decent timing curve
then you'll be alright.
hondata/powerfc are for those that want to get every last drop.

Im looking at selling the Stage 2 right now for cash + a Skunk2 and Mugen chip from someone here on Hondata-Tech...do either of those two programs have decent timing curves?
The Hondata is a very nice tuning tool, Im not going to argue with that. It just doesnt seem to fit me right though. I like to be able to tune it myself, WHENEVER I want...not wait on someone else's schedule...know what I mean?

skunk2/mugen program i dislike because they are open loop programs.
but if you dont mind the poor gas mileage and possibly fouled plugs
then give it a shot.

stock computers run in closed loop when the engine is warm and the car
is idling or cruising. what this means is the ecu reads the o2 sensor and
compensates to make the a/f mixture as close to stoich as possible.
Open loop disregards the o2 signal and runs only based on its preprogrammed
fuel maps. open loop operation is mainly during cold start and at wot situations.
open loop programs run that way 100% of the time.

Ahh ok I understand. That is the way my Hondata was setup with the first chip it had...now with the new chip I got last night it reads the O2 sensor again...
...too bad its detonating now
Hit and miss tuning can lick my sack

I've seen more problems with 3 V-AFC's than I have seen with ALL the SFC's I have seen over the years. But that is another discussion entirely...
Heh...yea.
Ive used a S-AFC on my old setup and tuned my friend's B20VTEC with a VAFC and I like the ease of use and the on-screen display. I know some people just throw theirs in the glove box, but I like mine in view to watch and record peak numbers and such.

that's odd. seems to me like V-AFC LOVES to throw code 21. even when the wires are connected 100% by the book.
happened on two of my friends cars. did the diagnostic procedure outlined in the helms for VTEC solenoid DTC and everything checked out fine.
hmm.. what kinda problems w/ the SFC have you had, john?

ecu can only compensate so much though. if you are running INCREDIBLY rich
during part throttle, then vafc may help with that respect, but since vacuum is low
during cruising, it probably wont help that much.

sgT, you are the man once again!!
I would think I am running incredibly LEAN instead, since my part throttle setting on the VAFC are all on the +side except for idle, except for the idle at 1000rpm. It will be fix once I install the FPR and larger injectors. But on the full throttle setting, the idle is still on the +side. Because I think I only need to tune the idle setting for partial throttle and not full throttle, since I never at full throttle when the engine is idle!! Is that correct?

I haven't thrown a 21 in the 2 days I've had a vafc in the car yet! lol I'll let you know when/if it pops a code.

I *never* threw a code with my V-AFC. Well, at least until the Spec B's arrived
Nope
Heh...probably this weekend with the VAFC and either Mugen or Skunk2 chip...gotta see which is better.
