Matt Johnston/Honda Civic Win class at Sno Drift National Rally (pics!)
For those interested in Rally stuff, we took our first win at the Sno Drift rally this past weekend.
It was super super icy after the top 10 cars polished the road, and lots of people spent alot of time in the snowbanks. Still 80MPH on the ICE covered straights.
We pushed hard on stages 1 and 2, and built a lead, then we kept out of the snowbanks friday and saturday to win the event.
The win gives us a 22 point lead in the national championship. The next event is Oregon Trail. (Or maybe Cherokee!)
Thanks to Cobalt Friction for support.

Great pictures. Congrats on the win!
After watching years of WRC, it never occurred to me to use a FWD car rallying...didn't make much sense functionally.
But I keep seeing Honda's rallying here, and it looks like a hell of alot of fun. I'd love to try it, but I see the repair cost being HUGE! Even if you don't wreck it, I can imaging the suspension and subframe taking a beating and needing to be repaired quite often.
More power to ya, Matt! Keep the pics and wins coming.

JOOC, What kind of tires are you using? Sizes? Different types for different conditions? Anything readily available to the public?
There's the obvious Kumho's, but just curious if they are the all encompassing tire, or if there's something much better not readily available, or if there are other snow or street tires that are preferred.
Thanks.

I have been out of rallying for a while. I doubt any rallyist is running Khumos on stage. Michelin makes quite selection of rally tires. Pirelli seems to be the choice for quite a few competitors. The tread designs and compounds are quite agressive to handle all the different conditions one can find in the back woods roads.

The Khumos are actually quite popular down this way with the "budget racer" crowd, mostly your production class or older G2 cars.
Michelin and Pirelli are an even spread among the rest, from what I've seen.

I stand corrected. I haven't seen any mounted up here in the NW, nor have I overheard any talk of them.

cool stuff. Do you guys have to seam weld the chassis to keep them together? Or is the cage enough?

I'm not sure what the conditions usually are up that way, but with exception to the loose sand of Sandblast, the rallys down here are usually pretty brutal on tires. This makes the Khumos welcome to those on a budget, because they can run them for up to 3 rallies with no problems.

I wont be at Perce Neige. Routebooks scare me.
I will be at Defi, Baie, and Tall Pines though!
I've used Kuhmo's, Michelins and Falkens. Michelins and Falkens are good. Kuhmo's not so much. They are ok for sand/mud though.
For Sno-Drift we used Nokian Hakka Q's. A very good ICE and snow tire. Lots of people used the new Nokian RSi, which is supposed to be a bit better.
Thanks for all the support!

My car isnt seam welded. Most are.
My cage is pretty comprehensive (20+ attachment points)
I wish I would have seam welded before I built it, but oh well.
