Default Bad throttle response / hesitation on 92 LS

My b18 idles perfect and has no loss of power but when I stab the gas or shift and get on the gas I have about a 1/2 to 1 second delay before it does anything. Its annoying while shifting because it feels like i dont know how to drive a 5speed - it drops back like a downshift then takes off.

I can hear the intake suck in air and bog before it actually revs up.

its obd1 and there is no code. i changed the cap/rotor and the wires plugs etc are good.

help please!

ive searched and didnt really find anyone with exactly the same problem.

update: it doesnt do it when the engine is cold. also, if i very lightly touch the pedal and then hit the gas it won't do it. This makes me feel that it is something electrical and not mechanical.

your fuel injectors could need cleaned/ replaced as it is an older car

also check your spark plugs

Just my guess, plug cap wire and rotor doesn't do much to throttle response (butt dyno?), in your case I would check anything that has to do with air flow, like air filter (plugged?), throttle body cleaniness, plugged cat, bent in pipling (scratching the bottom and dent the header piping?).

I have also read an article in my mechanics shop that O2 sensor may have something to do with compensating sudden change in intake pressure (quick stump on gas/quick release), since it is OBD1 it may not throw a code if things aren't right.

Do you get typical fuel economy? If you have modified the piping size in the past it may be harming it in the low end.

i dont think its o2 sensor, you would be throwing a code, and i have no o2 sensor wired on my b18 and it doesnt have that problem...

i would say check your injectors and have you done a compressiontest?

I had a hesitation issue also. I changed my plugs and that was that. Try using a bottle of fuel injector cleaner, and try changing your plugs. If the issue is still there, try doing a compression test and/or leak down test.

ok ill do that.....but im almost positive the compression is fine. there is no power loss at all. my zc did the same thing but it was slow as hell and found out i blew the head gasket.

I doubt it's the headgasket. Check to see what color your exhaust smoke is.

hey man lets start with the basics, Fuel and air

1. Check all of the intake tubbing, make sure no crakcs plugs etc.
2. Chech throttle plate fro excessive carbon, and if you have it aprat you might as well clean, get some throttle body cleaner, recomend 3m, and an oold tooth brush wipp all the sludge off there and see what happens
3. if the car bogs under hard sccelration it is almost like it is getting no fuel becasue you heard the intake surge. check the vacuum lines on the fuel pressure regulator. are they crakced or broken. If you have the capabitilies check the fuel pressure, i am not sure exaclty the spec, but if you have the gauge on there snap the throttle, see if it drops then spikes up hard, drops and doens't come back, or if it goes below 25psi (i am jsut assuming) there has to be a problem. Also if you have the guage take off one of the vacuum lines on the regualtor, the pressure should go to max and be higher than the running pressure
4.If none of this stuff works check tps sensor, there could be a dead spot in it. i doubt that but id could be many things are possible

good luck let me know how u make out

it looks like its something with the distributor. it looks like its not an LS dizzy. its positioned weird and one bolt doesnt line up. its cranked all the way advanced but it feels like its retarded.

previous owner put on stupid red vacuum lines and messed them all up. it had a vacuum leak and he just lowered the idle afterward and wondered why it had a hesitation.

got a diagram of the lines and put it the way it should and it runs awesome.
