I have had my belts tightened a number of times to eliminate the ear piercing scream that my car emits for the first 5 minutes after I start it up, but it hasn't made any difference. Any suggestions?

 

Are they new belts?

 

The belts should not do this if they are the correct size, in good condition, and tightened properly.

 

They are new belts put on by the dealer when we purchased the car and had him do some engine repairs.

 

i have this same thing happening -- but i haven't replaced any belts yet as i dont want to if that's not the case....what causes this? I'm pretty sure it's the belt on my alternator.

 

well, this happened to my friend's galant, and no matter how much we tigtened it, it always start screeching after a day or so. it turned out the alternator was bad and was binding and causing the belt to slip when it tries to spin the alternator
