Default New, need some help!

Hey,

My name is Rob, I am from West Chester. I just signed up about a week ago to respond to a thread I did not have access to, but I figured I would start posting with some questions that I would like to get some information on. Any help would be appreciated, because I am new to the world of Hondas and need to start learning.

I am in the process of looking to buy a Civic hatch, preferably the EK body style, with a GSR engine swap. I want it to be stock looking on the exterior, with the exception of wheels, lowering, and possibly carbon fiber spoiler and hood. I do not want anything with a body kits, neons, and any other attention grabbers, because I would like this to be a sleeper. Interior I want to look stock as well, but that is not quite as important, as long as it isn't terrible and distracting. Believe me, I am being very picky, because I am taking a huge step down in automobiles, this is a very hard thing to do for me. I currently drive a 1998 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am with SLP Loud Mouth, SLP Lid, Pacesetter Long Tube Headers, and Pacesetter Off-Road Y-Pipe running 12.688 @ 110.51 with 100,000 miles on it in the quarter mile and definetly has more in it as is. Reason I am getting rid of that is some recent events that has me in a situation to sell, also I have been debating selling it for various other reasons before this sticky situation of needing to get rid of it. I don't want to get rid of it, but I have to, so here I am. Anyways, here are the questions I have.

1) What do I have to do to get off trial membership on Honda-Tech.com?

2) I want to buy a fairly stock motor, probably just a GSR swapped Civic hatchback with no major work, because I don't really trust pre-worked cars, so what would I want to look into for parts? What is good? What are prices usually like? What are some good places to buy?
a) Cams (and any internals I will need)
b) Turbos (and anything else needed)
c) Other (anything that you think I will want or need)

I am planning on having around $8,000 or $9,000 to work with. I am not going to want to spend the whole amount on just the car with a fairly stock GSR engine in it, I want to spend around $4,500 to $6,000 on the car and have money left over for modifications or possibly a daily driver. Anyways, thanks for the help!

Rob

Well Rob you have definitly come to the right place. Remember Honda's are typically slow so anything that can be done to them probably already has so be sure to use the "Search" feature in the upper right hand corner of the page, it will save you a lot of time and potential flaming.

As far as your question go;

1) It is either a certain ammount of time or a certain ammount of posts before you get off "trial" status.

2) If you are looking to turbo the car which is what I would reccomend then you need to look into getting some turbo camshafts designed specifically for boosting. Along with cams you should replace your valve springs and retainers. Someone more familiar with turbos will be able to answer any quesitons you might have about compression.

3) There are many different options when turboing a car. You can either buy a turbo kit ie: Turbonetics, Greddy, Junkyard turbo kit etc... I suggest going with a predetermined turbo kit specifically designed for your vehicle if you have the money for it b/c it saves a lot of hassle. I believe you can get a full turbo kit for less than 3k.

Good luck and welcome to H-T.

Thanks a lot man, hopefully I can get some more response about what parts to look for. I think I am going to stay all motor for a while, unless I can do the kit and have everything I need and not break anything. I really have no idea what to look for in terms of brands and parts I would want, such as cam sizes and stuff. I was just starting to get the hang of cams for the LS1, than I have to sell it and back to square one.

I understand that... If you want to stay all motor then I would look into getting your basic bolt-ons. Intake, Header, Exhaust, Cams, Springs, Retainers...

As far as an intake it depends on what you are looking for. A cold air intake you can get for 30$ off of ebay, they work just about as good as any other CAI (cold air intake) I have seen with the exception of the V2 from AEM. If you want a name brand go with AEM, they have 2 different types of CAI. The basic AEM CAI which you can get for about 130$ and then the V2 which runs about 250+.

As far as a header is concerned then I would go with a DC-Sport, they are very nice quality. 4-2-1 is the best in my opinion.

When you are talking about an exhaust then you have to go with what you prefer. As far as good name brands go then you would probalby want to look into Magnaflow, Apexi, or Greddy. Personally I have a custom 2 1/4" w/a magnaflow resonator and a greddy style fart cannon. You can also get a Hi-flow cat for a decent price, that helps too.

Cams will probably add the most performance of anything you add to your motor with the exception of forced induction. There are several different good type of cams out there, Zex/comp cams, Crower, Crane, and although I am not to familiar with what is interchangeable, people will probably tell you that Integra Type R cams will be your best bet. Make sure when you replace your cams that you also replace your valve springs and retainers, that will prevent you from ******* up your engine.

----- That took awhile. lol
