I just put a B16 into my CRX and it fires and runs but the battery dies after about 10 mins of running I want to test the alternator before I buy a new battery. Thanks
There is the old school way.Have the car running then just disconnect the pos battery cable. If the car dies the alternator is junk.If it stays running time for a new battery
correct me if im wrong

if you have a volt meter check the batt voltage with the car off. then start the car and read the voltage again. with the engine running you should have 13-14 volts.

check the voltage across the battery while running AND also check the power wire at the alternator to ground. should be nearly 14.5V at both ends. if not, then something is wrong.
im not going to go into whether unplugging your negative terminal at the battery is safe for your engine or computer, but in my mind, if you have to resort to THIS test in order to test your alternator and it DOES die... then you should have known WAY before that your alternator is bad.
BUT, if it DOESNT die, it could STILL mean your alternator is bad if its overcharging to 16V, your alternator/voltage regulator is still bad and needs replacement.
pulling the negative terminal is like shooting a dead guy in the leg to see if he's dead or not... when you could just check his pulse.
the charge warning light is also a pretty good indicator theres something wrong with your alternator.

i dont know if you know how to do it but you could full feild the altenator, because most likley its the regulater thats bad and by ful feilding the alt you bypass it and the altenator puts out all the power it can.
