Default EARLY CRX/CIVIC SOHC Final Drives...

Special Projects Motor Sports is negotiating with SRR to produce a run of 4.7 & 4.9 Final Drives that Will Fit in the Early Crx & Civic Cable Transmissions...
We believe that the 4.7 or 4.9 ratios are sought after for ITA, H4, and the odd Autocross car?
We are not taking orders just yet... As we have to purchase a large quantity of these things to make a production run worthwhile, we would like to get an indication of what the demand would be before we place the order.
We would hope to be able to sell these at our normal price of $475.00?
If we go ahead we should be able to supply about the end of February.

Please post a reply or IM if you are interested.

I WOULD BUY a 4.7 ratio for that price if it were available. Price is the only thing that has kept me from getting one before now.

I'd take a 4.9 at 475

edit: I'm interested in a final drive for the 88-91 l3 transmission, not the 1st gen crx

Count me in for a 4.9, for a 1st gen. CRX.

No!!! Don't get too excited. They are for the EF series cars, the 88-91 Civic and CRX.

Given the popularity of these cars in STS and ITA, these things are going to sell like hotcakes. And (sure to spark debate) if you pair one of these with a OBX LSD, you've got a killer race transmission for less than the price of a houseman/ATS/OPM final drive OR a quaife/KAAZ.

There was a debate raging over 4.7 vs. 4.9 a little while back, but there never seemed to be a concensus on wether or not an ITA prepared CRX would actually run out of RPM on a REALLY long straight..... anyone?

Hooray for KIWI if he can pull this off!!!!!

Oh, yeah, I'm in for a 4.9.

I think someone just needs to run the numbers and see what the calculated top speed would be based on tire circumference and FD ratio. I don't remember the 5th gear ratio off the top of my head, but if I had that I could come with a multiplication factor where you input circumference and it would spit out the top speed. Someone may have done this already...

OK. Here are the numbers for 5th gear @ 7000rpm (assuming 205/55-14 tires):

Stock (4.250)
139.4mph

4.73
125.3mph

4.79
123.7mph

4.90
120.9mph

I ran the numbers here: http://www.race-technology.com....html

CRX ratios are:

1st: 3.250
2nd: 1.894
3rd: 1.259
4th: 0.937
5th: 0.771

Here are my calculations…Looks to be similar to Gregg's findings. Different tire and rpm.

Assumptions:

Fifth Gear
Engine Speed = 6800 rpm
Tire = Hoosier 225/45-15 (71.5” circumference)

4.7 FD Ratio would have a speed = 127.0 mph
4.9 FD Ratio would have a speed = 121.8 mph

4.25 FD (stock) would have a speed = 140.5 mph

Seems to me that the 4.7 would make more sense. You would really have to zing the motor to get the MPH for the 4.9.

So KIWI, are these for the 84-87 tranny or the 88-91 tranny?

Sorry I was'nt clear about the Models: These Final Drives will be for the '88 -'91 EF Series.

Please Note: We have had absolutely NO problems with the SRR Products we use in our racecars. However, we have broken three ATS Final Drives in our own cars prior to swapping to the SRR Gears. We understand the frustration, but we also realize that these are Competition Parts and therefor are not covered by a warranty. My suggestion is that you have your Final Drive installed by someone who is completely qualified to do the job.
For every good comment I've heard about the SRR Final Drives I've heard an equal amount of bad experiences people have had...
So far the biggest problem (Not the only problem) seems to be the lack of experience of the installer...
Please rest assured, If we go ahead and have these things produced, every possible step will be taken to insure we are selling a good reliable part.

Thanks for the responses.

A 4.7:1 FD for $465 would be a Godsend. All I've seen for '88-91 trannies up to this point are 4.9:1s for $950+.

Anyone here with a 4.9:1 FD in an ITA/H4 CRX ever run out of gearing? If so, at what tracks?

I have stock (4.25) gearing in my car which is built to ITA/H4 specs. I hit around 120 on the main straights at VIR North and Summit. More than that on VIR Full. I have talked with a few racer folks that say 130 on the long backstrech at VIR Full with a 4.7x is normal. I am certain that you would run out of gear with a 4.9 FD...especially if you look at the calculations.

I don't think that there are any being produced right now with a 4.9 ratio. The highest I have seen it 4.78.

Thanks you so much for addressing my concerns. Also, your actions show faith and belief in the SRR product. I currently have no need for this application since I'm in the process of selling my ITA/H4 CRX but will be contacting you for my next application. Good luck and thanks for looking out for us racers!

I'd definitely be in for at least one 4.79 (possibly two), and I have a friend who has an ITC EF that's dying for something cheaper than an ATS or Houseman.

I'd be interested in a 4.7 in an ITC '90 Honda Civic, and I'm sure my friend in the other ITC car we are building would be interested also.

We'd also like to see a nice LSD.

Thanks Gregg.

Jeff-
What a great deal! I have to pay over 800 (my cost) just to get my hands on a 4.73 fd from ATS.
When we first pioneered this gear back in 1994, we had 4 other guys (fowler, and some others), go in with us on this special cut, we paid 1200.00 a piece to have Jamie Houseman cut them for us...of course it was worth it.

To see a price of 475 is just unbelieveable compared to the first price we paid to develope the gear box....You can count me in for 5 if you'll put the price in writing and promise me a completion date.

BTW- I just posted a gear box I built with a 4.73 and a quaife for 2350 if you know of anyone who is interested...need a zc gear box instead for a drag car.

oh by the way.....using the 4.73 I have never run out of gear, not even at Road America where the track record is held using a 4.73.
I ran in the 145's at mid ohio with that gear as well.....it was perfect for the 1.75 to 4.0 mile tracks....that might cover every track..lol
