I know this has probably been posted before... VIR crash pics
"Driver Jim Briody lost control of the Royal Purple #87 Mustang Cobra of DG Racing when the car's brakes failed in turn 14 at Virginia International Raceway on the first lap of the Virginia Festival of Speed Grand-Am Cup Three-Hour Race. Briody remarkably walked out of the woods unscathed after the Mustang went airborne over a tire wall and into the woods. You may click on the individual photos below to view a larger version"

That's a friend of a friend's car. What's good for him is that it was being rented out at the time, which means someone ponied up some big bucks to him.
Sure is a pain in the *** to rebuild another though

Looks to me like the wall is actually what threw him in the air. Part of the car was on the ground until he hit the wall. We had a similar incident at our local track where the tire wall actually threw the car into the air.

I think it was the first Speedtrail event on the east coast.. Unfortunally, there were quite a few off's that weekend, a lot of it had to do with the rain on Sunday..
What event was it that the white car went on the wild ride????
you are correct Adam. Saw the whole thing happen, then I remembered I had a camera in my hand so I got a few shots

How in the world do you get of course in a FWD CRX there?? I never figured that out.. Its a floor it and shoot spot...
Yeah, that's a very strange spot to be going off in fwd. rwd I can understand, because it can get hairy going over the curbing so people try to "correct", but in fwd, you can run over the curbing and not get thrown off line. MORE GAS!

Oh yeah, I can easily see that happening there. You can carry ALOT of velocity up the hill to the crest of roller coaster (I'm foot planted in 4th gear).
If he lost his brakes there... yikes. Mr. Toad's Wild Ride.

Re: the Mustang that went off - yeah I remember seeing that. I think I may have been at that race actually. That's the top of the hill entering roller coaster. I indicate well over 120 at the end of that straight...I imagine a Moto cup Mustang would be seeing 140 easy.
Corey I was constantly asking myself the same question. But people continue to go off there. Then one of my students showed me just how easy it is. It was a voluntary drive-off but still. Here's the recipe...
1. Overcook left hook and end up even slightly track right coming out.
2. Don't work around that mistake in right hook. You end up early, and you end up severely pinched on exit.
3. Terminal understeer to track left, the dirt, and if you're carrying enough speed and it's wet, the tire wall.
My student (who is on this board) had the presence of mind to catch the mistake quickly, and didn't try to fight it.
For those of you in this area (and those who autocross), I'm pretty sure that's the CRX that used to belong to Jason Minehart, who now has some H stock thing (Protege?).

Mustang...
Was that befor the pavement was put down for the bike race?
I wonder if a little bit of bumpity bump was going on (tires on concrete) at the top of the hill... then lost it
went farming.

I overcooked left hook once pretty bad, and I didn't even try, I cut left hook wide open and went agro which spit me right into the flat esses. Convenient
