Default How to close up sunroof?

What is the easiest / best way to close up a sunroof? I was thinking about riviting some sort of material on the roof, but is there a better way?

Is this for a particular racing series? If it's for SCCA Improved Touring, you'll need to close the hole with the same material as the rest of the roof (riveting or welding is fine).

Other series may allow a shatterproof, non-metallic filler.

Check their rules, not sure if they require metal. Either way, riveting it is fine. If you do a search, you might be able to find pics of what others have done.

I'm pretty sure you can use sheet metal, aluminum, or carbon fiber. IT rules require the same material as the rest of the roof, nothing else.

Your search for sunroof returned 20 results.

Search for SUNROOF in Archived content of RR/AX. I think you'll find what you want to see there.

best way is to find a roof skin from a non-sunroof car. Easiest way is riveting sheet metal over it

I'm in the process of plugging up my sunroof as well right now. Rather than just riveting a plate directly to the roof, I'm shaping a steel plug to the size of the hole & I'm riveting it in the sides, so no rivets will be visable on the roof. I picked up a 20 gauge 2' by 3' piece of steel for $20 & I shaped it around a plywood template that is the exact size of the hole to fill. Then I got some sandpaper, primer, & exact body color paint from E-touchup.com for $25. I'll be riveting it in this week, so I should have some how to pics by the weekend!

just remember carbon fiber is only legal for Honda Challenge. If you ever decide to head to SCCA, it's not!

Sheet metal and some screws. https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1076674

In retrospect I would have gone for the carbon fiber plug. This did cost less though.

I had a sheetmetal roofing place cut a piece of aluminized steel a little thicker than the original roof material, with holes punched around the periphery. I riveted it in place with some clear non-silicone sealer to make it waterproof.

Because I knew I wasn't going to match the OE white exactly, I painted it black to emulate the original glass moonroof. From a distance, people don't know that it isn't stock.

That's a pretty cool idea, Kirk, with the black paint.

I'm going to cut a section of the roof off a DX civic for now, size it to overlap the hole, and seal/rivit it into place for now. Not sure what color I'll paint it, now that I've seen Kirk's bad *** set up.

Eventually, I'll get an entire DX roof and probably have KIWI do a roof replacement, with a new front windshield.

Kirk, what brand/kind of sealer did you use? How's it holding up?

I have NO idea anymore. I just bought a small tube and pitched it when I was done, knowing full well that it would just get hard and crusty. It was a "paintable" household caulk/sealer. I made a tiny bead around the hole, little circles around each rivet hole, and injected some into each rivet center after I painted it.

K

EDIT - it took me about 30 minutes to draw the cover on a cheap CAD system (I used to teach drafting a 100 years ago), and it cost $90 to have it fabricated - and NONE of my time. I didn't have to buy material I didn't need, spend a bunch of time cutting, put up with my crappy handiwork (not having the right tools), or bleed during the process.

I don't have my EG with me but can you tell if there's a slight curve from front to rear of the sunroof opening? I want to weld in a piece but I don't know if a flat piece will work. If so, then it would make my job a hole lot easier. Thanks!

If you have a DX donor now, I'd go ahead and do this. Its not the most fun you'll ever have but geez, just do it right the first time if you have the opportunity to and especially if you have any reason to remove the front glass.

It's a time thing, more than anything. I'd rather do it right the first time, but with licensing school less than a month away, I'm not sure if I'll have time to take the car to KIWI's to get it done, much less knowing what his schedule is like. With the inaugural Honda Cup race this weekend, I'm sure he's pretty busy. Not to mention the fact that I haven't specifically asked him about doing it yet, he had just mentioned on another thread that he was willing and able.

I know I can fab a cutout section of DX roof, seal, and rivit it in, in a matter of hours, and it would not preclude me from doing a full roof reskin at a later date.

Richy, I have been told that because of the compound curve (front to back and side to side) that you'll end up with a ripple somewhere, using just a flat sheet. Kirk's looks good, though, and I think that's what he used. I guess it depends on how careful you are. Good luck.
