Timing Belt Service + Valve adjustment = 4mpg increase!
I just had timing belt service done along with a valve adjustment. I had the dealer do it. I was going to do it myself, but I chickened out. The valve adjustment was $85 and the timing belt service was $550. The timing belt service includes timing belt replacement, water pump replacement, and all other belts. My car has 102,000 miles on it and sounds brand new and has no oil leaks. Hoping to drive it 200,000 plus
Also, I started using synthetic oil about 25k ago. Before I used to have to add a quart at 2k after oil change. Now, i am currently 4k past my last oil change and it still does not need oil. Since I am using synthetic, I now change my oil every 6k instead of 3k. Synthetic is the best!
BTW, I used to get 23 mpg (delivering pizza), now I get 27-28 mpg.

Oy, $85 for the valves? I'm glad Aleph showed me how to do it myself! Believe me, it's not difficult at all if you have the manual (or can get someone to copy/scan it) and some patience. well...I guess you have to know someone with a torque wrench or you'll be spending that much on the tools...but yes, doing a tuneup makes your car very happy!
poser.......
Anyway, Trench, if you don't feel like doing the wrenchwork yourself, next time try going to a shop instead of a dealer. Should be a little cheaper depending on where you go.

my friend's dad has a garage and hes doing my timing belt when ill need it, i already talked to him and he said i can help/watch. theres nothing better than guided practice and experience!
I was going to have a local shop do it, but with something as vital to the engine as the timing belt, I didn't want to take any chances. Besides, the belts(3 regular + $40 timing belt) altogether probably cost $70 and a water pump is $119. So, I might have blew an extra $100-$200 more on labor than I had to, but the job was done right and with a warranty. Didn't want any bent valves on my perfectly good engine. I'll do some work by myself, but sometimes you just don't feel like tackling the big stuff.

Its better to pay someone if your not comfortable doing it. With the importance of the timing belt, one little mistake and you could end up paying $1000's.

BTW, Machaf, my car is a DOHC. I purposely found stickers without vtec on them because I can't stand ricers. But, I'm sure you were just joking.
Fireball, 916mi / 33.9gals = 27 mpg. I reset my trip after each fill up and keep a running total. I also make sure I top it off so no air pockets in the tank throw off the figures.
