Boots
I figure I should probably have a pair of riding boots, since I wear dress shoes and Timberlands and the like while I'm riding.
I like very plain stuff. The less it looks like a motorcycle coot, the better. I'm not really into showing off (my jacket is just black textile).
Anyone know a nice, effective monochromatic boot out there? That deal from newenough (Teknic boots for a little over $100) looked nice, but I dont know how good those boots are.
Can someone point me in the right direction as far as quality goes? There are a lot of differing opinions in here about the quality of some brands (Icon, JR, etc), so I'd like as many opinions as possible.

Sidi are the shiznit. The "Setup" boots on New Enough's website are supposedly made just like the Sidi, but I haven't tried those.
I have a pair of AGV Sport, and they're crap. They started falling apart on me within a month of ownership.
Try on boots so you can get a feel for the fitment - some have a small width.

I've just got a fresh pair of the new Vertigo's (not the Corsa's.. though I think the added instep feature is likely worth it).
I like them.
I've been wearing Sidi bicycle racing shoes for ages and can vouch for their quality... their street boots must feel amazing.
Whatever you do, go to a store and try whatever you like on. Comfort and fit is a serious issue in this department.
Oxtar makes a boot that seems, and feels like it would offer more than enough protection on the street but looks like a sneaker with jeans over.

Being the gear-***** I am, I'll probably pick a pair up when they come to the local dealer in my size.

I do like the looks of those Teknic Lightning ones that someone here linked us to a while ago.
How's the quality, anyone know?
It has a steel shank, does that pose any problems for comfort?

If I don't get them for my birthday, I plan on picking up the A* GPS3 Riding boot. Someone we rode with from .com had a pair and highly recommended them. They're not flashy at all (I think you and I have the same idea about being understated) and actually look pretty similar to the Teknic Lightning. The only problem is they're $25 more than the Teknics.

My co-worker has these. They look very nice and he likes 'em. Wears 'em around all day wherever when he rides.

Yeah, probably.
My helmets are pretty simple, and my jacket/gloves are all black.
Still not sure if I'd call those A* "understated"...I was thinking more along the lines of something that could look like a real boot.

Pretty much the same on the helmet and jacket here. They're not understated as far as boots go but I think they are when compared to other full protection motorcycle boots.
A* also offers a "street" boot called the Roam but it just doesn't look like it offers the protection of the GPS3. Supposedly the GPS3 is the compromise between the street Roams and the race S-MX3.
I'd really like to feel them both... with my hands and my feet to see which one I like better. Does anyone know if Coleman stocks these?

I wear Sidi on roads with the sympatex liner. Have owned this pair since 2000 and wear them sometimes even when not riding. They are THAT comfortable. Plus, they are waterproof COMPLETELY. Never had a leak no matter HOW much rain I had thrown at them.
The Setup boots at newenough look ok, and they are cheap. Does anyone have anything to say about the quality and protection they offer?
Sidi boots would be nice, but Im not spending 360 bucks. Especially when I don't ride very hard and don't track my bike.

I've wondered how much protection is enough. Usually, leather jackets are from 1.1 - 1.4mm thick and most work boots are probably thicker. I know my DrMartens are just as thick as some race boots. Only things that would attract me on a race boot is the plastic sliders and ankle/heal support. So, if the motorcycle boots in question don't offer those extra layers of protection, I'd just stay with some nice work boots.

That's really what I'm wrestling with.
The guys at the bike dealer told me that my Timberlands would be sufficient, but most everyone in here would deem that squidly behavior.
I'm not going to buy a ridiculous-looking race boot. I don't go to trackdays and I don't wear brightly-colored gear.
The second boot that Chris/Apocalypse posted looks nice, but I wonder if, as you and I are both thinking, it isn't just a bit redundant.

I think the main reason why I see boots as necessary is ankle protection and the added insulation of sliders. I'm sure the leather aspect of regular boots is adequate but I'm not comfortable I won't destroy an ankle if I go down in my Timbs. There's also the added benefit of a boot that's specifically made for gear shifts. It's nice to not have to worry about effin up a good pair of polished boots. I just wish they had the race boots with the graphics of the street boot. I like the idea of having my foot wrapped in hard plastic but I don't necessarily need to advertise I'm doing so.
Before you make a decision not to get any Ross you should walk around in a pair and see how much safer they feel. Think about how much better you feel in your riding jacket versus just a plain leather jacket.
