Default Registrating a Stolen Salvaged Vehicle in California......question about requirements from DMV

I'm wondering about #3

What does that mean? Do they just check the VIN on the dash? Or do they check everything?

**** u cant see that lol hold on. Well it says:

3. A verification of vehicle (Reg.343) completed by an authorized DMV representative or a California highway patrol officer who has physically inspected the vehicle.

My question is how do they "verify" the vehicle in these terms. And what does the "inspection" entail??????

Thanks for the help guys. I just want to make sure my K series isn't going to hold me back from getting it registered and insured.

You may be able to have a CHP occifer come to your home and inspect it, or make a 911 call and say it's an "emergency".

in ky when i did this

the highway patrol officer looked at the vehicle to see if it was road ready.
then wrote down the all serials off the engine/trans/and anything else he found.

i guess to run the serial to see if they are legit.

but chp might not be as relaxed otr it might depend on the officer.

I mean he can't really expect a stolen salvage to have the original motor. Even though I do have it. So is there anything in the law that says I can't run this K-series besides it being a JDM motor and not SMOG legal???

I don't care about smog that can be handled. I'm just wondering if there needs to be a VIN# on this motor.

Worst comes to worst I could put the C5 back in, drive it for another 10 K miles and then get the K20R, but damn that is a pain in the ***.

as far as I know, there is no rule that says you can't swap motors. Old school hot rodders to it all the time. The serial number, or lack thereof, might be a problem. The only real way to know, is to ask. Go down to your local CHP office, and ask. If not, you might have to go the long route and put the other motor in just to get you on the road. But this is only a one-time thing, after that, smog is your only hangup (I think!)

Keep us posted.

Hmmm well i can't really say that though because this is a stolen salvage. Unless I can convince him that they stole my b18c5 and put in a K20R for me LOL

As of right now, there is no way to bar a k20 motor.

According to K20a.org it's been done on a few occasions, but you need all the emissions stuff in tact. EVAP stuffs and u need stock usdm rsx ecu blah blah. But it's been done.

Does the above statement that I posted mean it needs to get bar'd? Sounds to me like they just write vins off of everything.

I don't see why it wouldn't need to be bar'd unless it was the original motor which was not stolen. You can try and see if they get away with it

If it needed to be bar'd wouldn't they have stated it on the DMV papers? Or does inspection by DMV representative or CHP officer mean bar'd? This **** is confusing, but damn I want that K-series so bad it hurts LOL.

And yes, it doesn't say so you should call the CHP office and see what they check for.

So the K20 would have to be BAR'd?
I'm still considering a K20 after my motor goes boom.

I believe you're in Sacramento so I'll give you my experience with registering my salvage R. There is an inspection office in Citrus Heights off of Douglas blvd. The CHP officer basically came out to my car and made sure all the physical aspects of my car were intact and working (doors, hood, trunk, windows, etc.). Than he checked that the all the parts that should have vin numbers on them matched the car (tranny, body panels, etc.), than he checked that the engine code matched (assuming you'd be running the b18c5). Anything that should have a vin and doesn't match he'll want reciepts for. It's not as in-depth as it sounds, pretty much took a couple minutes when he finally came out to look at it.

That's what I hear as well. But I just got my temp permit from the DMV and they said when I bring the car in to the DMV the person is just going to match the VIN on the window with the paperwork to make sure that this is indeed the car in my posession.

She gave me the option of CHP or DMV....i told her DMV was more convenient. SO I do not know if they go as in depth as CHP.

Does anyone have experience getting their car checked out by a DMV representative?

Thanks for the help guys.

The C5 is going back in the car for now because it'll be easier to get my smog done and all that first. Then I'm going to transfer the C5 later to my project and put a K20R in the race R.

I had an out of state titled car inspected by the CA DMV. The guy made sure all the vins were original and were on all the panels of the car. He also checked to make sure all the lights were functional.

It took me a total of 1 month from the initial appointment to the actual visual inspection. I had saved every receipt that was used to restore the car in a folder. The CHP officer took my folder and copied every receipt that I had.....Just make sure you have both airbags in your car or he/she will not pass your car.
I think the scariest part of the inspection was that the officer might notice my JDM front and not pass me due to the week bumper support and the non DOT Headlights ! Just IM if you have any more questions................
