Default Comptech 421 or OEM JDM 4-1...Which Better????

fellas, this isnt a poll or anything, but instead i'm hoping to get some advice from fellow R owners in choosing one of these headers. my situation is a little unique, in that i can get either one FREE as a gift from a friend who ows me for a lot for helping him out with his car. both are mint in excellent shape, but both are different in design and theory. i just dont want to have any regrets after the other sells. i'm pretty excited to say the least, as this will be my first performance upgrade for my R since new...well, i do have a spoon can in the back.

currently i have the stock header and b-pipe, and plan to keep the b-pipe for a while longer until the cash flow is there to upgrade. i know i will have to get a new cat also.
any help would be greatly appreciated-
thanks-

PS-i know in the great header test both performed well, so it is still a toss-up for me

I would personally go with Comptech 4-2-1.

The reason?!?
-I HATE dealing with aftermarket cat that quits after 3-24 months. Screw that crap. I love reliability and not having to worry about stupid crap like that, so I would rather have Comptech 4-2-1 over JDM 4-1.

p.s. You can get JDM ITR cat to match it to JDM 4-1, but you never know what you're gonna get when you get a used JDM ITR cat (& no secondary O2 sensor, AFAIK).

For the simple fact that the OEM jdm 4-1 can have a heat shield, that's my choice.

Ok i personal don't have an R, but are the stock ITR JDM/USDM cast-metal. If they wouldn't it be better to change to something that weight less.

arnold, i would also go with the comptech header. with the jdm 4-1 header, as you probably already know, you'll have to get a "jdm length" cat converter. i personally have a jdm oem cat converter that works well and hasn't given me problems (not yet...knocks on wood). but for the sake of simplicity and it being carb legal, i think that's the better choice.

if however you plan on a "jdm length" cat, go with the jdm oem 4-1. if i'm not mistaken, the comptech is a nominal 2-1/4" collector where the jdm oem is a nominal 2-1/2" collector.

good luck bruddah!

I had the JDM 4-1 Ex. Manfold on my R.....including an AEM Short Ram intake, 2.5 in. Magnaflow hi-flow cat, and Apexi N1 Full Cat Back Exhaust. Plus an AEM EMS.

I did a before and after test for ****'s and giggles........but I mainly wanted to know my power results. The OEM header is damn heavy.... and JDM is a bit lighter by a few pounds or so. Power difference, lost some torque in low end 2-3 RPM band, mid range 3-4 RPM power is still about even to stock, but when VTEC engaged at 5800......... man a monster came alive out of the JDM Header and I was able to feel the power set me back..... compared to the OEM header Vtec nice's but it doesn't engage as hard as the JDM. Here are my dyno results....

Day 1. I had my R dyno'd at 169.9 HP & 124.4 TQ..... Stock.... not bad for stock!

Day 2. I had the R dyno'd with all the bolt on's at 182.3 HP & 126.4 TQ...... pretty decent #'s... still needed to work on tunning.... but my Horse power power spike at 5800 RPM gained 30 HP. Horsepower spike for the stock dyno was 25 HP.

From my experience the JDM header was a great boost in vtec power and a good invest for the R. Don't have any experience with the Comptech 421, but I've heard great results about the header from racers who Auto X & Road Course.....all I know about the 421 is that it's better than the JDM for low end & mid range power!

Good Luck with you decision...hope I was able to help out.... Just giving ya my 2 Cents about my experience.

Mr. B
