block guards
are they any good? ive heard both good and bads. seems like theres a lot on the market and they would be a great addition to a mild street engine. when is the block guard needed: rpm, boost...?
Blockguards do 2 things:
1. They aid in preventing sleeve walk which occurs at high RPM. Sleeve walk can cause premature headgasket failure due to the sleeves moving because of piston side loading when in the upper RPM range.
2. A good blockguard will help prevent the stock sleeves from cracking. It is not a cure all for sleeve crack, but it does help. Our block guard has a tapered bottom for ease of install.
You almost always have to get your block re-honed AFTER installing a block guard. If you have the $, then sleeving your motor is the best choice, but a block guard will definately help you out for a mild street motor
