how often to change synthetic oil?
I usually go about 5,000 miles on my 92 LS with i/h/e, 150k miles using M1 10w30. If you really want to know the answer, go to the Blackstone Labs web page and order a UOA (Used Oil Analysis) Kit. Take a sample of your oil, send it in, they will send you back a printout that tells you how much additive is left, how long you could go, if there is coolant in your oil, and levels of metals, etc. It's very helpful.
On newer cars, I have seen many people post UOAs with Mobil1 and Syntec that said they could go with a 8k+ OCI (oil change interval).
Example:

This guy was using Castrol conventional for over 4,000 miles, and they told him to wait until 6k because the oil looked so good. The people putting synthetic are usually told to stretch it out to 8,000, but nobody ever does even though their oil looks perfect.

You should easily be able to hit 5K+ miles. In fact, I've run 5K mile OCI's on Chevron 10W-30 dino without any problems. I had Blackstone do a UOA (+TBN) on the oil and the numbers were fine. Definitely go to the BITOG site and read up on oils.
Also, I would advise everyone do a UOA on their oil. There is a wealth of info that one can learn about how there car is running from these reports.

Owners manual for my GSR says 4500 I thought. If you change it at 3K or less and aren't FI, or racing, you just like to spend your money.
Chicks don't dig guys that like doing stuff prematurely. Go at least 4,000, it'll be fine.

If you run sythetic oil, you can stretch it but most don't choose too. For example, all e46 bmws have 10k+ mile oil change interval, using BMW synthetic motor oil, which is cheaper than any aftermarket synthetic oil.
I have figured out that mobil 1 0w20 is the best oil to run. I run it in my built motor and i have had no problem with it. A good friend of mine that used to work at Acura he always put 0w20 in his race car and he told me that if you change it between 3k and 4k that you dont brake down the viscosity of the oil. i use mobil 1 and change the oil about every 4500 miles.....ive heard you can go 10k miles between changes with that oil and be fine......ive actually gone 7k miles between changes before....and im kinda weird, when i change my oil, i check out consistency, color, and smell....on my car, the oil consistency, color and smell was the same if i change it at 3k or 7k miles. so, id say every 4500 miles is good!
they say once you go synthetic don't go back.....regular oil change ever 3k should be fine. the previous owner changed the oil every 3k and so do i, and when they did the swap, they said they had never seen an engine as clean as mine...i don't use synthetic
