Late night discussion.... Powdercoating my wheels and would appreciate input!
So tomorrow I have to drop my Volk Te37s off to get refinished at the local powdercoating shop. I was thinking that I wanted to get them powdercoated Bronze, but I am concerned that the shop cannot duplicate the texture and color of the original finish. So rather than try to to copy, perhaps go with something unique. My car is NBP, if any of my fellow ITR peoples have any suggestions, lets have it... I am considering gunmetal or bronze.
And for the record any of you brave souls that want to refinish your Volks don't do it unless necessary. The stickers alone where $160 (WTF
)

Did you really suggest Phoenix Yellow or Championship white for a wheel color? Absolute Madness!!
As for the Gunmetal I am seriously considering it. After looking on ITRsport.com and seing the Volks in gunmetal I can see the appeal, but then again Bronze is sexy too. I just wish powdercoating shops used the same paint codes as bodyshops that way the gunmetal could be closely matched to the factory wheel.

The bronze Volks are anodized, not painted/powdercoated, hence the difficulty in getting a powdercoat to match.
Personally, I would go with a gunmetal color with a flat clearcoat. A friend of mine had a flat clearcoat done on his wheels, and it looks great.

Being that I am a quasi-entrepreneur, and have my business license, I just so happen to have an account with a place that deals with Macken. They were more than happy to get me the stickers. But each sticker is $20, 2 stickers per wheel, you do the math. If afterwards you still want some shoot me a pm. I also got new valve stems and center caps.
Yeah, I have read somewhere that Bronze TEs were anodized. Trick but difficult to duplicate.
I am not a fan of flat wheels only because of the sheer amount of time it takes to maintain them compared to a semi or gloss clear. Brake dust just impregnates itself into the wheel and never lets go...
So now that we established that Volk anodizezzzzz, where can I get that done and how much does it cost?

I forgot to explain I am one of the many asinine members on this forum who do not fully appreciate the search function. I'll check into that,

Gunmetal seems to be the color I am leaning towards... I am off to find some pics for comparison purposes, Kepani and ITRsport will be the targets. BRB

As far as matching powder to ano, you / your shop will have to use your eye and try to get close. The surface treatment is so different, the exact look will be difficult to duplicate exactly. Go for the overall impression of the two colors from a little distance - don't scrutinize too close. Hopefully they have accurate color samples.
Ano is an electrostatic coating like powder, but is instead a hot dip chem bath. Ano is a bit more expensive, much thinner, not as durable, and demands much better metal finishing prior. This often requires the metal be stripped in an acid bath, which wont work on some wheels (no dis-similar metals - i.e. rim bolted to center). Then it's usually fully polished (even more cost).
Ano is more jewel-like, shiny and bling looking than powder. This depends on the extent of the polishing beforehand. But it needs to be waxed religiously to preserve it's finish (every month at least). Ano is more difficult to 'mask' for, so for example, you prolly cant ano the center and not the lip without disassembling the wheel (which is not advised, may be unsafe, and will void your Volk warranty).
Powder is just much easier. It can be repaired by polishing and waxing. You can also touch-up paint it if you can match the color. It will cover and hide imperfections in the underlying metal, and no polishing or heavy stripping is required first (bead blast is fine, my shop says powder over ano is even ok). You can mask for powder easily - just like for paint. Powder does come in metallics and metalflakes now. Waxing twice a year is usually enough.
Think about Gunmetal powder w/gloss, maybe even gunmetal grey with a grey or silver metalflake + clear. I have black Volk powder w/grey (silver?) metalflake - very nice.

I powdercoated my stock wheels. One failing of the process is that you cannot mask off any areas. So any spots you don't want a finish (like where the hubs or lug nuts seat) you have to sand off later. Also, if you track your car, the high brake temps will soften the finish and the coating at any areas under compression (like at the lug nuts) will soften and squish out drastically affecting you ability to not have your steering wheel shake like an epileptic with Parkensens. Also, the coating is quite a bit thicker than paint
pros: looks trick
cons: not for a track car
btw stickers on wheels=

I would say Lime is the ultimate wheel color for an R. Subtle, tasteful, one with nature...
