It'd be pretty hard to replace the tensioner w/o removing the bolt...

Short non-obnoxious answer...

Yes you can take out the bolt.

If you want to remove it expect to remove your crank pully, lower timing belt cover, driver side motor mount, and while your at it you should do your timing belt, waterpump and buy a new tensioner.

why does the crank pulley & driver side motor mount have to be removed? only for the timing belt?

Because that's the only way to get the belt on.

The crank pully needs to come off so you could get the lower cover off to access the tensioner. Since you have the crank pully off you might as well do a timing belt change while your at it.

damn, so much work just for the bolt.

so basically, there is no way to just take out the bolt and replace it WITHOUT changing the timing belt? let's say i just replaced the timing belt....

You could but you need to go through the same process.

See if you take off the bolt without the cover off you will loose the hole as well as the pully because the timing belt will throw it from its spot. I wouldnt go through all that trouble with the timing belt cover on.

The reason the helm manual says not to remove the bolt (with the lower timing cover on), is because if you do, the tensioner pully will pop off & fall all the way down to the crank. Then you will need to remove the pully, valve cover, upper timing cover, lower timing cover & timing belt to get it out.

If the bolt is striped, its already too late for you. Your waste deap in it now...

BTW: You don't have to replace the T-belt, and water pump and tensioner, its just super easy since you will already be in there (5 extra bolts to remove).

the tensioner pully will not fall to the crank....but it will be pretty hard to get the bolt hole lined up again...the reason why the tensioner wont fall is because it is on a pivot point built on to the tensioner...and a tensioning spring on the other side...you need to take off the crank pully, timing belt cover.....your timing belt is fine i saw it....dont change anything else....let me know if you get the bolt off....i've fixed this problem before and i know whats up...
