Default How do you like your DX TRANNY?

Currently I have a 92 CX. Iam in the process of swapping out the cx motor with a D16Z6. I was looking to swap out the cx tranny for an ex cause i heared the cx tranny sucks. Thing is I can only find a DX tranny for $150. Do you guys think the DX will be much of an imporvement? Would it be more worth while to just put the CX tranny back in with the Z6 and drop the tranny at a later time and put in a EX tranny? Any suggestions are welcome. thanks alot, oh and in a couple of months the car will be turbo charged too, so iam looking for a tranny thats decent for a turbo setup.

No... wait to find an EX tranny. It will be well worth the wait from what I've heard many times on here.

I'm pretty sure that the Dx and the Ex tranny are the same, but i'm not 100% sure. The Cx and Dx are different though. The Cx gears are the most ecnomically designed tranny for the civic, and well the Dx isn't exactly setup for acceleration lolz, but it's a lot better than the Cx.

DX and EX are not the same.

I also say wait for an EX tranny, 96-00 if possible (steel shifter forks).

I have a d16z6 motor and a dx transmission. I love the dx transmission a lot. I hit 60 mph in second real easy and down shift to 3rd doin like 85 mph bringing me up to 100 real fast. I dont think that a z6 motor and a dx transmission is a bad swap at all, especially if you are going forced induction. Just personal experience... The dx transmission is not as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

No. Shorter gears will accelerate faster than longer gears... end of story. The powerband on honda motors are high, so you need to keep the rpms up as much as possible. If the rpms drop too much when you shift you will fall out of vtec/boost. The gears in the EX tranny aren't even that short, they are actually pretty long compared to b-series tranny's.

well i have never driven a ex tranny but i am pretty satified with the dx. I would still wait though for the ex if you are looking for the upgrade. The dx has to long of gears, i think the redline is 32mph 1st, 59 2nd, 89 3rd, 112mph 4th, 5th=top speed. The ex ecelerates faster and as farva said, the hondas have a high powerband so you want the rpms high after you shift not to drop back down to below the vtec.

Save your money until you find a ex tranny, pref 96-00. You'll thank all of us.

when i redline 1st w/ the ex it stays in vtec, not sure about the other gears but im sure it does. when i redline w/ the dx it drops to like 4100 rpm. and the redlines w/ a dx are 1st-37 2nd is like 60 3rd is 103ish and 4th and 5th are top speed

You should either get an Si Transmission, HX, or preferably, an EX. I just picked up a 2000 EX for my SOHC Vtec ZC; and it's clownin'. If you're going High boost, and Mile runs, then DX might be a better bet; better top speed. If you're going Lower boost, or Moderate boost, with 1/4 or even 1/2 mile intentions, your Si or EX transmissions are going to be a better bet. DX I believe has the longest gears for economy, but you can always change the synchros. However, the 92-95 model DX is cable, the Si, EX, and HX are all Hydraulic. If you're planning on using the D16z6, you'll want Hydraulic anyways....

Good Luck, and enjoy SOHC!

Look harder. D-series transmissions are easy to find. Start checking H-T Classifieds, eBay, and call around to your local import salvage yards.

Not nearly as much as an EX/Si transmission.

Yes.

It doesn't matter. EX/Si transmission. Period.

SI and EX tranny's and engines on 92-95 are the same...

DX tranny blows... its all in the tranny. you could have all the power in the world
but the tranny does the job of putting it on the ground... without that you have nothing...
96-00 EX with LSD.... <whos with me
