Oil Cooler install question
I've just pieced together an oil cooler kit.
How can I make the -10AN hose ends fit snugly with the -10AN stainless braided hose? It doesn't work very well just screwing them on.....

Of course what?
The hose doesn't thread into the fitting, the fitting splits the rubber hose and then tightens down on it when j00 screw it down on itself.

no need to use grease -- just some black electrical tape to keep the braided metal sheath from fraying.

So your saying that I should screw the hose end right on top of the tape?

Dude...READ UP ON IT! Go to the link I provided and download the installation instructions. That will show you the PROPER way of installing AN hose-ends, and it will show you that you're not even close to having it right.
Feel free to ignore my help and doing it your way, but have some kittylitter at the ready when you start it up, cause you'll have oil shooting everywhere.
*shrug*

did you read what el pollo diablo said? the fitting is configured backwards in the pic you posted -- it's the red end that attaches to the hose.
unscrew the the end of the red fitting -- it'll look like a nut with a hole through it -- slide that over the hose.
take the flared end of the 90 and insert it into the hose.
screw the nut back onto the 90, which will clamp down on the hose and hold it in place.
follow?

I've got another question regarding the oil cooler install:
Is is safe to start the car "as normal" after the oil cooler is installed? There will be no oil in the cooler and the hoses. Is there something I should do make sure there's oil in the system before I start the car?

If you have a thermostat then I don't think you can do anything about it. The oil won't start flowing through the system until it gets up to operating temp so I don't see anything negative from starting up normal. You might want to go ahead and add in an extra .5-1 quart of oil because when the T stat does open up it's going to bring it down though.
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong on any of this.

That's a good idea
. But where does all the air in the hoses/cooler go? When the thermostat opens it'll get pushed into the engine, but then what?

The thermostat will still allow a small amount of oil (usueually around %10 of flow) to pass by when the temps are low.
Just add a bit more oil (about 1/2l) and let the car get up to operating temps. Check oil again and top up as needed.
And you do NOT have to strip the steel braid off.
