Default 1G ZC CRX vs. mk1 VW Rabbit

What do you guys think, pros and cons of each?

I myself have owned 2 modded Rabbits and an 86 CRX Si and loved different qualities in both.

An immature and closed minded discussion in a VWVortex thread in the mk1 forum got me thinking what some other people think about the 2 and a matchup between them.

Im not asking about any other models except the 1g CRX Si and the Rabbit GTI

I really like both cars.
I've owned a stock '85 crx si and it was an incredibly fun car. I've never owned a rabbit, but I've seen them kick *** at autocross.
For me it would be a flip of the coin.

I've always thought of the Rabbit as a girls car.

In the past 4 years, my garage has gone from straight VW to straight Japanese.
My reason is the reliabilty issues I had with VW, and their **** customer service when the heater core died in my '92 Golf. Granted, reliabilty issues will always be present with older cars, but my dubs broke all the time. My Japanese cars, never. My experience, my opinion.

As far as CRX vs. Rabbit, I'll take the CRX.

...but a dumped Rabbit on polished P-slots with a chrome roof rack is a beautiful thing.

i owned a 1983 Scirocco Gti... owned at the autoxs and was a great track car... they just have LOTS of little bugs that you have to work out... so much so you really have to love the car before you will keep it... i did till the motor blew with 256k miles on it....

i've had an 88 CRX Si and i have a 90 CRX Si... both great with autox and track days... and more reliable... easy enough to work on too... SO i vote CRX!

if it was a Rabbit GTI vs 1G ZC CRX i would take prolly take rabbit... but your rabbit is fugly and an econobox version.

1GZC CRX vs your new rabbit, shoulda kept the CRX. I rather take the bitch car.. red cabrio in the background. look at it's factory stance and body.

Winner on left side
1G ZC CRX vs your new rabbit
Rabbit GTI vs 1G ZC CRX
2G CRX vs Rabbit GTI

Obviously there is going to be some bias here. There is SOOO much aftermarket support for the EA-T its hard not to want to go with the Honda. I own a 3rd gen Civic Si (which is basically the same thing) and I am in LOVE with it! B20B/VTEC, some suspension mods, and the sleeper look cant be beat IMO!

I don't know the cost of swapping any engine into the MK1 or what all is involved, but HASport is the MAN when it comes to the 1st/3rd gen Civic/CRX's and b-series engine swaps. It really all comes down to money for me, and if it was more cost effective for me to build a MK1 VW then Im all for it.

I have known like 3 people who have had modded rabbits/GTI's, and I loved them. One had exhaust, lowered, dvd, and all the good stuff. I liked it because it was a convertible. I might have to go with the rabbit here because I have seen soo many good ones done and not so many of the crx's. However, after 1987 the crx OWNS. just my $.02.

I would say something about a pair of toilets but that's just mean.

Rear tires are a little small, no?

Its ridiculous how clueless those guys are, they're just pissed Hondas are easier and cheaper to make faster and they are more reliable.

As far as the whole 1g vs gti debate, I dont really know much about rabbits, but i will tell you one thing in terms of exterior and interior, the styling of the CRX is far greater, 1st gen Si won motor trend import car of the year in 1985 i think, when it was tested it was quicker than a lotus at 1/4 of the price, and we got the waterdowned version in NA. SCCA put the 1g in the same class as the corvette because its such a good auto X car, B series mounts drop right in, making tons of power readily available

personally, i've always loved those old vw's. don't get me wrong, i love my crx si and hatch si, but for some reason driving them is a funner feeling, but of course, to have one, is a labor of love, because they break down every five minutes.

if you relate cars to girls, hondas are the reliable ones you know what your gonna get all the time, and are pretty fun, but the vw's are the high maintenance but really good in bed girls. just a tradeoff of which you want. I'll say this, after owning vw's, it was really easy to completly rewire my hatch. they make you a better mechanic, i don't know if thats a good or bad thing.
