chech the u-joint in the steering column 1st. i had a lot of play in that on a crx i had. a new one solved it. its an easy thing to check before you go and drop out the rack.

Down under the dash, on the floor, where the steering column connects to the steering rack, is the U-joint he's talking about. I think that's the one he's talking about.

As far as I've ever been able to find in any of my CRX factory service manuals, all '88-'91 CRXs got the exact same steering rack, at least in the US. The myth about the HF being a quicker rack is misleading; the HF rack IS a quicker one ON THE FIRST-GENERATION CRX ONLY. It's not that big a difference, either (3.6 turns lock-to-lock vs. 4.2). I put one in my '87 Si, but the biggest difference I notice is that it's harder to hold it on-center on the highway. It's more twitchy and nervous.

I can't say if the Civic STD got a different rack or not, but I'd bet it's the same.
