Default Normal engine temp??

On your car, where does the needle on the temp gauge usually stay?? I just noticed that the needle will go just a little over the half way mark when warmed up for about 10 min and pretty much stay there, but its also 10 degrees outside so just wondering if this is normal or high? or what to check if it is high

Mine stays a little under half most of the time. I was driving around today and it was 40 degrees outside and it stayed the same. I was also driving around a few days ago when we were in the single digits and it stayed the same, under half. I would say it stays around 3/8th or so most of time. I have a D16Y7 engine, which is a 1.6 Liter SOHC no mods. As long as you are not over heating it should not be a problem. Check your coolant just to make sure. Also have you flushed it lately??

i'll definitely check the coolant level, hasnt been flushed either. I drove it about 150 miles straight on the highway and it was again a little above the halfway mark but stayed the same spot the entire time. I'm just worried about when it gets to be 80 outside.

UPDATE: My coolant level was low, the hose going to the radiator had a small leak so i got that fixed, but now i'm noticing that my fan doesnt turn on at all?? How long after a warmup does the fan normally come on?? I think this may be the problem!

so now i notice for sure my fan wasnt turning on, the temp gauge on the cluster would drop as i'm moving and go higher as i'm stopped. I jumped the connector for the fan where the lower coolant hose goes back to the engine and the fan turns on. So do i need to unscrew the brass fitting that the fan connector connects to?? Looks like a hex screw at the base. Or is it something else i need to replace??

should be just below the halfway point.

mine does. the needle never moves. ...except when it's warming up from cold, it warms up real slow. but once it gets to just below half, it stays. no matter how looong and how hard i run it, and no matter what temperature it is outside (though, it does get a notch colder when driving on the freeway when it's below 50 degrees outside).

Mine stays little less than 1/4 of the way from c to h, way less than the halfway mark no matter what. Maybe you guys need to flush your coolant.

if its cold outside it can take a long time for the fan to turn on at idle. if you are overheating at idle because the fan isnt turning on you need to replace the fan switch.i belive its on the outlet side near the thermostat but im not 100% sure.

but be sure you are overheating at idle, not just being impaitent and the car hasnt fully warmed yet. it can easily take 30 minuets to warm up to the point where the fan needs to come on.

this is after driving for about 20 min, i would be at a stop sign and sit for a min, i would watch the temp gauge get pretty damn close red mark, then i would start driving and i would watch the temp gauge go down. Fan doesnt turn on itself! I'm gonna take pics in the morning of what i think i need to replace. Its the brass fitting just next to where the lower radiator hose goes to the block. The fan connector is right there and i unplugged that, jumpered the holes and the fan turned on. So i think i need to replace the brass fitting i explained above

just bought a new fan switch, does anyone know if i'm just supposed to unscrew it and let the coolant spill out a little or if there is a way to pinch it off so i dont lose as much??

Just something I noticed. I dont think you can really compare your temp gauge to others cars. I mean they aren't calibrated very accurately so one persons halfway mark might be your 1/4 mark. The only way to tell is with a temp gun or something.

And with that said, mine runs just at the bottom of the little thermostat icon and stays there no matter how hot it is outside. It may budge a little in the summer with AC on.
