Need Help...can't get something off my '89 crx
I need help with getting the crank shaft pulley bolt off my '89 crx si. I have tried everything in my power to get it off the car, but it just won't budge. I need to get it off so I can get to my water pump to change it out.
Any suggestions I would appreciate, Tera
i really powerful impact gun (1200+ lb/ft) dont try to just hold the trigger keep hitting the trigger, the initial impact is what will break it loose
if you dont have access to an impact i cant give you any advice
i work at a vw i have access to everything i need

i had a b!tch of a time until i used an impact wrench. it took the biggest one the tool borrow place had to take the bolt off the old d15b2 crank pulley. so try and get a big-*** impact wrench!

If you're working at a place with shop air, obviously, an impact wrench is great.
If you're working without shop air, I recommend heating it up as was said above with a torch, and then break it loose with a very long breaker bar. A cheater bar comes in really handy for things like this. If you have a long piece of metal pipe around, slide your breaker bar inside it and use the pipe for extra leverage.
Good luck!!

Honda sells a tool that holds the pulley still so you can remove the bolt.. But your still going to need a really big breaker bar..
You dont need air tools for this, however its ******* hard without them. I used a large breaker bar and a huge long square metal bar around that and (I also learned that I can pull a hell of a lot more then i can push) pull that 5ft long bar combo back and that bitch nut should pop loose.
Oh yah also I held it all still with a wrench screwed onto the flywheel and wedged into the casing

well I have a breaker bar and the long metal tube to use to put on it to break it loose , but my problem is that the motor is still in the car. It is not possible to get the metal tube onto the breaker bar to push it. Hell it is hard enough to get the breaker in the confined space. But I am gonna try to break it loose with the impact wrench this evening. Will let everyone know how it goes
later :-)

o god it took me 2 hours of thinking on an ls to do it . finally we took of the starter(if your car is 5 speed) and put a screw driver in the flywheel and then had some1 else jump on a breaker bar with a huge pipe on it it finally worked and DONT FORGET THE ANTISEIZE wehn u put it back on
Get a couple ten inch extensions for your socket so you can have the breaker bar outside of the wheel well, that way you have plenty of room

if you do that you gotta be extra careful because with extensions you could easily pop the ratchet off the bolt and hurt yerself

Use a jack to support the extensions and you'll be fine.

If you really get stuck, put it all back together, drive to a local shop when they're not busy. The closer to home, the better...a tire shop, lube shop, brake shop--doesn't really matter.
Slip the shop monkey $10 to pop it loose for you with their professional air tools. Tighten it back down with your breaker bar. Tight enough to limp home but loose enough you can get it back off by hand when you get home.

That's what I would do...DO NOT heat it up! That's how you ruin your harmonic dampener! You'll end up having to buy a new crank pulley in a couple thousand miles and then you'll have to go through this all again!

Couldn't you put a breaker bar on it and have the end of the bar to the ground and bump the starter until the bolt is loose??? Sounds dumb but it's an idea.
(considering the engine is still in the car

Remove starter, wedge in a prybar between the teeth on flywheel and the block. Then have someone with a breaker bar and extension loosen up the crank pulley bolt. Works everytime.........
If you don't have any access to impact wrench
go to the nearest shop that has one........
I did that to my moms accord and my brothers integra I just give the guy 5 buck(for tips) It save you time and energy

That sounds good to me...
I broke a couple pulleys putting bolts through them like that picture...Once it is locked in place....
3/4" breaker bar + 6ft pipe = crazy bolt and nut ownage
OT:I ended up snapping 3 - 1/2" breaker bars trying to get my axle nuts loose (yeah I pryed the dent off of the nut) Got crazy ownage with the 3/4" breaker bar...lol

wow thats rough all I did to get my nuts off was #1: pop off nut cover. 2: pry up notch. 3: use a 1/2" ratchet with 32mm socket and cheater bar and my friend jumping on it (hes heavier than me). it worked pretty good that way, besides its a craftsman ratchet so if it breaks... new one!

The way I took of my pulley was to just put the car in 5th gear and have my brother press on the brakes. I used a 1/2 inch craftsman rachet and put an extention tube that was pretty big on the end of the rachet and I got it off in a couple seconds. We took of the tire and put 1/2 inch extentions to the socket. If the pulley starts slipping, just press on the brakes a couple times and then hold it again. It should work.
We broke 2 craftsman sockets doing this on another civic, so we bought the impact craftsman socket. It didnt even scratch that one but my brother lost a couple pounds in loosening the bolt
