Annoying whistle with AEM CAI... NEED help
I just finished installing my AEM CAI and when I take it for an initial test drive it sounds awesome except at about 1/4 throttle. At about 1/4 throttle in any gear there is an annoying whistle type sound coming from the intake. I got home and re-tightened all the hoses and filter, I am pretty sure it is not an air leak. I was wondering if this noise could be coming from somewhere in the engine and is just now audible because of the intake. Anyone have this problem? Any thoughts or suggestions would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

The only reason I was to ask and post was that my friends with an AEM on a 94 Prelude VTEC and a 95 Del Sol VTEC, dont experience the same noise. Is this noise unique to the Type R? I really like the sound of the intake at WOT but the whistle at 1/4 throttle may give me enough reason to get rid of it. I have searched quite a bit and have found that many if not most people dont really like the AEM CAI but it seems that a whole lot of people have the AEM listed in their sig as a mod. I find this quite strange.

my car came with comptech intake, filter and icebox. had the same whistle and I hated it. put the stock arm and filter back on, while still using the icebox. car is much quieter and I can live with it, now.
yes, the whistle is normal if you install any aftermarket filter. Actually, the whistle is there with the stock setup, but you just don't hear it as much because of the materials they use for the arm and filter. I'm glad I had the chance to compare stock to aftermarket and could make up my mind for myself.
anyone looking for a used comptech intake and filter?

The comptech filter on the stock arm/airbox works great. You can't hear the whistle with the airbox lid on.
I don't know if comptech will sell the part that mates the stock rubber hose to their filter. But they should.

I remember hearing it in my car, but not recently.
Seem to recall someone saying it might have something to do with how far the filter element it pushed onto the intake tube (inside the fender area).
Ed - who used to think the "whistle" was somewhat cool.

I've heard it on a car with just a comptech filter also. It was alot more subtle though. I love my whistle. Very odd at first but I like it now. My friend's GSR with an Iceman intake doesn't whistle though.

I (and friends) installed my AEM and didn`t have the whistle. After a couple of days I decided I would adjust things and make sure everything was tight, not rubbing etc. I pushed the K&N filter onto the tube more than it was (there was an inch or so of room left) and then the whistle began. I suspect it is the way the air flows around where the rubber and the metal tube meet and would suspect the whistle would go away if you move the filter assembly back an inch or so. Try that and let us know if the whistle goes away.
I like the whistle. Like just about everyone else I pretend it`s my turbo spooling up and I pretend others are in awe of my powerful whistling engine.

it might help if you tighten up the aspirator connection on the intake elbow. it helped in my car. i don'tthink you can get rid of the wistle.
I really hate my aem cai, it came with the car when I bought it and I didn't get the stock parts. I'm planning to get an Ice box when I get around to it.
If you're buying the Icebox to get rid of the whistle, you should probably be aware that the Icebox has a little whistle, too.

I've got a crazy whistling, winding, sound from the engine and I just removed my CAI for the winter (alittle late but whatever). It's later a winding sound can anyone help with that???
Checking the breather hose that runs from the valve cover to the CAI. If that is kinked or loose it can create an annoying whistling sound. Happened on mine once and I just had to adjust the hose.
sell it and get yourself an icebox if you dont like it.
Nick Wong posted the reason and solution for this problem (it had something to do up near the throttle body..dont remember because I dont have an AEM) about a year or more ago here. Try the search function. I dont even remember his user name though...pwrbndtyper??

I had an AEM and never had this noise. Installed an Injen intake and now I have the whistle. It hasn't bothered me enough to do anything about it, but would like to know a solution to it if some one knows it. And for what its worth, I really like the Injen much better than the AEM.
