Is my cat dead/shot or not?.........
Hi,
I am considering putting on my jdm oem stock cat cause the raspiness and boominess of my current exhaust setup is driving me crazy (stock oem jdm 4-1, test pipe and fujitsubo rm 01 A cat back).
The problem is that we had cut off the flanges from the oem cat to fit them to the new test pipe....... and my oem cat has been lying in my garage for like a year or so........
Do you think i could weld the flanges back and put it on......i don't want to damage my engine or something......
Cause i heard stories about a faulty cat clogging up the exhaust and cause heating problems.....
What do you think guys....help me please ....

I think people have mixed success. I've had a carsound on my car for about 1.5yrs... partially with the kenji ecu and running all sorts of richness. Track events, high rpms, tons of street miles and nothing wrong with mine.

I've had 3. One was 12" long and did not last very long, although the newer design is said to last longer (12" is a bit short and heat was not dissipating very well, burning up quickly, etc). The other two were jdm header/usdm exhaust length (17.x") and lasted a LONG time. One is still going, the other I can't speak for, but I had it for 1.5 years and it was used a year before that.
People who slap on i/h/e and a carsound or other aftermarket cat who do not tune their car are asking for trouble. You can't expect to run rich without any consequences to a very sesitive piece of emmissions equipment. It gets too hot, it burns. Tune = longer life.

Vteec,
I don't see why you can't weld the flanges back on the OEM cat. That shouldn't be a problem.
The problem would be if you are running overly rich, you'll probably kill the cat after a while....

I have one of the new one's on my Integra and have to say that I've had great sucess. I also have had roughly 5 hours of dyno tuning by Tom on Hondata so the temp is fine.

The cat won't go bad sitting in your garage. Extreme heat and vibration can kill a cat, that's the typical failure mode (melt/disintegrate the elements, which clog the thing.) If the internal elements look like little screens, with no big melted chunks, it should be OK. Also try shaking it, if there's loose elements in it that could be bad too.
If you want a cat, just put on your old one. If it dies for some magic reason, you'll lose a ton of power and it will likely sound like crap.
I have no idea why anyone told you your motor will be damaged if the cat plugs up. I've never heard of it, just loud rattling and loss of power. You might be running super-rich since the MAP won't know that you're not getting much air through the engine, but **** happens.

Thanks for the reply Chris !
In that part of the post are you refering becuase of the secondary o2 sensor please?
I think i will try and check manually the cat as you told me.....and i will install it......

Nah, when in closed loop it should be fine because of the primary O2 sensor. secondary o2 is just emissions crap AFAIK.
When at WOT, the ECU would assume a ton of air is making it into the engine and out the exhaust. But if your cat is plugged, barely any will make it through, and the ECU will continue dumping fuel into it (open loop).
A really restrictive exhaust will make you rich at WOT, and a open header will make you leaner at WOT, when using a MAP sensor, since it's only measuring pressure. (extreme examples) A MAF sensor measures flow, and could take this stuff into account, but MAF sensors have their own issues.

Turbo applications are more sensitive to a clogged cat - due to the excessive heat backing up into the turbo itself.....
Allmotor, you should be fine.....
