High speed oil burning SEARCHED
What's up, HTers. My 92 gsr w/140k runs great and normally doesn't burn oil at all, but when I cruise at 80mph/4500rpm on the freeway for extended periods (I drive between san diego and los angeles a few times a month) It'll consume half a quart or more
. What could be the problem? Are my rings going out? Any input is much appreciated, thanks in advance.

before doing the rings I would try the valve seals. Oil pan gasket. If those 2 don't work well you are on to the rear main seal and you might as well do the clutch/ flywheel while you are in there. Then if all that is a no-go. Then you can go after the rings.
I'd definitely try the valve seals before going after the rings. Just so you know. I've been eating oil for the last 80K at high speeds but what can I do? I go from South FLA to Philly 1200 one way. Ave speed 85 MPH. 30 miles/gallon. I take a case of oil and put in a quart every 300 miles. This is no joke just keep dumping the oil in there. Just one more item to check at the filling station. "A tank of gas and a quart of oil, please!!"
Then while you keep the lube going you have time to save for a swap or new car. Get into the routine. Lube a little - save a little/ lube a little - save a little drive. drive. drive. (save a little more, little more).....Welcome to lube room.

it can be a combination of a couple things.
one of the main things to look out for is crank case pressure causing blow-by. especially at high speeds/rpm the crank case pressure can increase allot on these little engines.
check that your PCV valve isnt plugged and maybe invest in a proper catch can system (endyn).
if the PCV system is all in check then do compression and leak down tests and that will tell you where your oil is going.
im estimating its a 50/50 between the PCV system and oil control rings. 140+k probably isnt much for a honda engine but it still is allot of miles and the rings are probably on their way out.
good luck

I have the same problem you do, except mine burns a quart about every 400 miles.
Let me know how it goes. There are no visible leaks cause I've done all those, cam end plug, oil pan gasket, etc...
Mine isn't leaking it, it's burning it. There is actually a bit of black smoot on the tip of my muffler. I haven't done a leakdown test to figure out exactly where it's leaking from.

take it from a guy who did all the lil stuff before he bit the bullet and rebuilt the engine in the garage.
Save money and just get a leakdown test. I wasted time doin all the little things and used up a lotta dough on oil, seals, heavy oil etc. Granted they helped a lil ( and i mean little) but its alot easier to get a leakdown to verify the prob.
Leakdowns will cost about 60 bux. After finding out it was the rings for sure I rebuilt it myself with ACL bearings and OEM rings. Now it doesnt burn a drop.
I went from 1qt in a two hr drive at 75 mph to 0 oil consumption.
Good luck and lemme know if u have any questions and cant find it here

Ya I know what you mean, I'm planning on checking the compression myself and then taking it somewhere to do a leakdown. I'm just trying to minimize the problem until I can deal with it. Thanks for the support!
