Default Master Cylinder bleeding question

When changing out a brake master cylinder and bench bleeding the new one.....

can you just fill it with some fluid and pump it and let the fluid drip out? or do you have to run hoses back up to the reservoir and recycle it until all the air is gone.

recycle till the air is gone, use hoses on the ports and run them into the resevoir, fill the resevoir and pump (i use a push rod) till the air is gone.

What I did was put a hose on the end of the nipple on the slave cylinder that led into a can. (I had to do the bleeding myself). Anyway, I would fill higher than the max line on the clutch fluid reservoir, then go inside and pump the clutch while trying to see how much of the fluid in the reservoir was draining.... after a couple times, I closed up the slave nipple, closed the cap, and I was done.
