Sorry man, but my ITR has a PR3-3 head. The last digit is not as important as many believe.

PR3-?, all that means is that its a B16 head. Then you have to look at the years which are upside down dumbers right after the PR3-?. You can have 88-91 which were 1st gen b16a heads. Then they can say 96-98, which is usually type r, because Honda didnt use that head on any other cars in those years. then your left with 99-00 which you also see in the type r's and 99-00 civic si. Type R heads and B16 si heads use the exact same casting. What makes it a Type R head is the complete valvetraing, and porting and polishing. The Type R is only on the inside where it counts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My old Type R head said PR3-2 which was a 98 type r head(built by JG) , and ive seen them say pr3-1, pr3-3, and pr3-4. Its all relative really and best way to know for sure is take the valve cover off and see whats inside. Thats where all the goodness lies.
PR3-X.
PR3 = Casting code
X = Actual Cast number
From the information I've gathered, there were four individual casts available to make b16/b17/itr heads. They are all the same. No one cast was better than the other.
The easiest way to visually determine whether the head is truely off an ITR or not is to look for the green paint behind the distributor. But as you can guess, paint does fade sometimes, and that is not always a 100% way of saying yes or no.

ok some of my question has been answered but i wanted to know if the pr3-3 numbers match up with the casting numbers after that.
PR3-3 numbers following it are 0/0 /7 0/6 0/9 does this make it a type r head

If that's what your head stamping says, then yes it would seem like Honda made a PR3-3 head in 00.
Also if you have the head in your possession, take a look into the intake ports, if they have bowl work like in this pic of my head then it's an ITR head, this is one of the things that separate it from a B16 head :
Sorry about the size...

Sorry for reviving a old thread, Im new here and my motor just went. I have a chance at buying a type r motor and yes its a b18c5, I don't have access to see under the valve cover as the motor is 3hr away from me. I get you can't tell if 100% type r by the stamps. After reading this thread I noticed someone listed years of cars with a pr3-3/2/1 cast code. I got the seller to foward me pics of the codes on the head which read PR3-2 and 95 in round stamp upside down.. Im kinda lost as in this thread no b16 or type r was listed here for that year? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks.
Thanks.
