91 honda civic struts
Hi,
I hit a big pothole on the freeway and damaged my tires and rims on the drivers side. After I got those replaced, I noticed the driver side was slightly lower than the passenger side. The mechanic said it was b'cos of a non-dealer upper ball joint on the passenger side which looks to be higher set than the driver side. He also said that it could also be the struts. I don't believe it is the upper ball joint b'cos that is from before I bought the car two years ago. I haven' t touched that. Also, the ride in my car is pretty bad nowadays. I feel like a mini roller-coaster ride if i go up or down a hump on the road and it seems like I feel everything single thing on the road i hit. So i figure it is the struts.
Forgot to add this: Braking is also very weird right now. Its as if the car goes slightly out of control. From googling online, i understand that bad shocks can affect braking. So i guess this is also another indication that the shocks are bad. Also I thought shocks absorbers and struts were the same. But looks like while they do the smae function these are different things. How do i know what my car has?
I checked with my usual mechanic and he gave me a quote of $88 approx for each strut (after market). Pepboys (they were the ones who replaced the tires and rims) on the other hand said it is going to be $45 approx for each strut. I'm wondering what is the difference. My mechanic was saying something about oil-struts and gas-struts. Could somebody give me more information on these. How do I go about deciding what strut to use? Where can i get more informatin about struts/shock absorbers in general and the ones for my car
My car is a honda civic 91 4 door, 5-speed manual.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

from your description of the ride, it sounds like you did kill the struts. and if only one or both on one side have gone, then that would explain your unstable braking. i dont remember what the OE shocks were(oil or gas) but it realy doesnt matter as far as general ride quality. both will be designed to give you a comfortable ride (in an oe-replacement shock).
