From the Beech Mountain Town Council minutes:
"Patti Mitchell, Executive Director BMCOC re: Proposed 2002 Hillclimb
Patti Mitchell addressed the Council asking for permission to hold the Hillclimb in May. Ms. Mitchell noted that the Chamber Board of Directors had approved the event and that the car club had agreed to all the changes the Town had requested. After a lengthy discussion Mr. Holland made a motion not to close the road for the sponsoring of the Hillclimb. Mr. Waligroski seconded the motion and it passed unanimously."

Basically the town decided that it was too loud and inconvenient.
The Atlanta Region SCCA is currently working on a hillclimb in North Georgia. I'll let everyone know if things work out.

Yep, that was me "JS" that posted it was cancelled. As everyone posted above the town voted it out. Basically they new town council was voted in Nov or Dec and most were...let's just say not from around here. They didn't like having the road closed for an hour, didn't like having to take the back road to get anywhere, blah, blah, blah...
We're now in the process of looking for additional sites in the Northern Georgia Mountains, Western North Carolina area / Eastern Tennessee area, and also close to where I live (or at least I am to checkout three potential sites). If you guys like, I'll keep you in the loop when we find the sites. We hope to have two hillclimbs per year (spring and fall).

We're asked to look at varity of things for potential sites. Most importantly safety. The road surface needs to be good condition (i.e. not a bunch of loose gravel going into a 90 degree turn where the road drops off 200'), need enough parking for around 100 trailers and cars within less than 1000' of the start point, then need enough parking for about 100 cars at the top (waiting until all competitors have finished to go back down), adequate room for spectators, the road needs to have the ability to be closed and opened up for 5 or 10 minutes every hour (from about 8am to 5pm Fri, Sat and Sun) preferably a bypass around the road , then we need the names of contacts in the local city/county government to contact. Then once all that is done, the actual SCCA region big-wigs (region exec, head safety steward, etc) takes a look at the site then decide if they want to pursue talking to the local community about having the event. Any other questions?
Bat Cave, NC ---where is that located? How do you get there? How long is the road? What condition is the road? Etc.

I think Deals Gap would be a great road, except only a few sections of it have a guardrail to keep you from plumming off the end, not a lot of room for spectators, nor room for trailers and what not, except at the bottow, where is there is A LOT of space for them. Maybe they could do it like Rally Events, just use certain sections of it and time each section of the event?
