Default speedo not working

at first i thought the speedo wasnt working because i lost the clip for the cable that connects to the tranny, so today i get a new one and the speedo still not working.. what should i check for now???? could it be the cluster? or the actual cable? or the sensor in the tranny???
thanks

Pull the springy cable thing out of the housing. If the end that's suppose to go into your cluster looks broken or isn't squared off that means the squared off end is still in your cluster. Go to a junkyard and get a new one. You're going to have to take the cluster out to fix it, no big deal.

No, just the cable that goes from the tranny to the cluster.

You could check the cable before you go replacing stuff.
Disconnnect it from the tranny and have somebody watch the tach.
Spin the spring-like cable and the speedo should move.
It should spin freely without any binding.

If it doesn't spin then either the cable is snapped internally or it's not connected to the back of the cluster.

And like WhiteDSM520 wrote, make sure that the end that plugs into the tranny has a square look to it and not rounded. Teh thing in the tranny is a gear drive - not a sensor or anything like that. As the tranny turns, the gear drive spins the cable. The cable spins the speedo and viola.

Make sure that you have the cable inserted all the way into the tranny. There is a grove in the tube that the clip slips into. Make sure it's in there right.

take the cable out of the tranny and pull the end of the cable if the cable comes out just replace the cable and then you are done
