Default welding directly to exhaust housing?

one of my freinds wants me to weld a V-band directly to his exhaust housing. ive seen this done several times so i know its possible, but what is the best way to go about it. is it any differnt than welding a thin peice of metal to a thick peice of metal? is it simple and im over thinking it? any suggestions apreciated.

cast turbine housing? I DEFINENTLY wouldn't do that. And if i wanted it there really bad, i would TIG it. You can't mig cast effectively, it will fail, and it is gonna crack like CRAZY. Spider cracks all over the place.

don't mig it... looks crappy.. i have tig welded a v-band flange and it's held up find to the cast exhaust housing....

I don't really care how it looks. I can make it look nice enough w/ a mig, plus I don't have easy access to a tig machine. I've mig welded mild steel to cast before and it held up fine. I just want to make sure I'm doing it right before I screw up my turbine housing. I think it depends on the quality of the metal also, I've seen cracks in a cheap cast manifold that couldn't be tig welded without more cracking.

Anyone have experience mig welding to cast iron? I'm going to pre/post heat and use stainless wire?

dude, please take my advice on this, DO NOT MIG WELD CAST. It doesn't work. I repair cracked cast iron manifolds all the time, and they all crack because someone thought they could modify it with a MIG welder. If anything braze it before mig welding it. My brass repairs on cast manifolds have been holding up great. do anything BUT Mig weld it.

You can have better luck with certain arc welding/soldering techniques moreso than mig also. I have only see mig work on like huge farm equipment with tons of heat dissaption abilities and huge machines.

Best of anything would be to tig it with nickel rod. You could arc it with a nickel rod too, but it will probably get too hot, you would need something to practice the heat range on.

there is no way you can mig this on and having it hold. the turbine housing is very thick when compared to teh vband discharge your going to weld on. you won't have enough control to penetrate the housing without burning thru the vband. no to mention the fact that you will need nickel for it to bond well, tig is the only good viable option. i have done this many times. if you indeed do not heed our warnings at the very least make sure to pre heat and post heat the housing. you will need to do this otherwise the welds will most definately fail....
