where does shifting @ redline put you?
I was looking at the gear ratios for 03 s2000s and 04 s2000s and it seems like the 03 would have a lot better chance of staying above 5900~ rpm at every shift if you shift at redline each time, allowing you to stay on the hot cam profile since you have an extra 1000rpms to play with. It looks to me like the 04 would put you at ~5250rpm on the 1-2 shift and ~5800 on the 2-3 shift, so the only time you could stay 'in vtec' would be on the 3-4, 4-5, and 5-6 shifts. Is this true or is my math way off? Where do you usually end up after shifting gears at redline (both 01-03 and 04/05 owners).
Also, if my math was right how does landing below the crossover in the 04/05 models vs staying 'in vtec' in the pre-04s affect the driving experience? I know on my friends 95 prelude vtec if you shift too soon on the 1-2 and 2-3 shift that you'll fall below the 5250 crossover point and you can feel the car bog for a second or so. I realize the s2000 is an entirely different machine so does falling 300-700 rpms below the crossover after a shift make the car feel sluggish for a second or does the additional torque make it unnoticeable?
Sorry if this is a stupid question, I did a search but came up dry.

umm when i shift at redline.. and i'm racing.. i stay well above the number you stated.... .. put it this way.. everytime i shift i stay in vtec the whole time..
Yeah, if you have an 03 the best I could tell the lowest you'd ever land if youre shifting at redline would be ~5875rpm on the 1-2 shift, which is right there... (3.133 -> 2.045 = 34.7% rpm drop, right?) with all the later shifts putting you at ~6500rpm, then ~7055, then ~7540 then 7516 on the 5-6 shift. (i guess?).
So if my math is somewhat close and its easy to stay within the aggressive cam lobe on the 03s and older cars, how hard is it to do it on the 04+s and how does that affect the 'funability' of them lol.
And funability is a perfectly cromulent word lol simpsons

well you're probably right if you do it though numbers.. but in a real life situation... if you're shifting though your gears quickly like that. you're not going to let go of the gass completely....... when i'm shifting though gears like that i still keep my foot on the gass... .not planted but it's still pushing gass ..... i haven't really payed attention to where it falls to when i'm into the next gear.. but when i have time i'll go check it out and tell you.. but i know i'm way in vtec after each shift..
yeah I figured if you landed 50 or 100rpm below the crossover on the 1-2 shift you'd accelerate past it fast enough that you'd never notice, but if you're dropping 34% on the 1-2 shift in an 04 then you'd go from 8000rpm to 5280, putting 700~ rpm away, I was wondering if that was enough to be noticeable for the 04-05 guys.

your explanation over aim sounded fine but what you said above was wrong

hahahhaha... ok here we go...
i redline, then push down the clutch while letting go of the gass, switch gears, then step on the gas and drop the clutch.... almost like you're rev-matching... and it's one continuous motion.... so while you're steppin on the gass you start to let go of the clutch.... by doing this i stay above vtec at all times..... i'm usually around 6800 to 7200rpms after each redline shift... but i will do it tomorrow probably and i'll pay attention to it and give you the rpm that i'm at...

Im not doubting your s2000 expertise (even though a lot know more) but you are wrong in this case...
Unless your clutch is slipping there is no way that you are at 6800 rpms when you shift into second....no way no how

Click on use s2000 ratios....that is for AP1
1-2 has the largest difference in the change of RPMs this is also why the sychros have to do more work on this shift and this is usually the shift people grind at if trying to shift too fast. The car does dip below the 6k mark during this shift for fractions of a second, you will not notice this on the street but it does....

nishant has 4.77..... me on the other hand i don't.. and like i said i'm not sure exactly at where it come down too cuase i haven't really payed attention to it... but i will do it in the next couple of days and note it on here... but i do know that i never leave vtec.. even from the 1st to 2nd gear change......
what i do is almost like powershifting... which is never taking your foot off the gas.. but i don't do it to that extent... it's very hard to explain.. you just have to experinece it...

for you road racers...i kno theres a couple of you... how often are you in vtec, i can imagine at times you get on it, but i kno for most other vtec cars(usdm dc5) will kick you outta vtec if your in it for a long time, thru say 3-6th gear...

i road race. it really depends on the track and your driving ability. i have been in vtec for a full half hour before and no problems. the track sessions were half hr each

Even though the 04-05 have lost a 1K RPM range, the torque curve was lowered too. Allowing the car to be at max tq/ power at a lower RPM. I'm pretty sure that when you race, the 00- 05 are all in VTEC range.

ok i just did the 1-2 2-3 and 3-4 redline shifts.. and this is what i came down to.. on each one.. i only did it once....
1-2 dropped me down to 6500rpm
2-3 dropped me down to 6900rpm
3-4 dropped me down to 7200rpm
this is also a little estimate from what i could see on the guage.... so with those numbers..... i'm in vtec at all times..
like i said you never drop out of vtec..
